I'd like to fit a cone air filtre to my Series 1 and also get more involved in the car. In order to do this, i'd have to remove the wing, so can someone outline the procedure for this?

Is it fairly straightforward? I've got a good wooden beam to place under the front as a jacking point and will make up some wooded ramps to roll the car onto and increase clearance for my trolley jack. (also want to remove the wheels)

I think I'll soon be needing new front discs and wonder if this is in the realms of DIY?

There maybe some useful info here, but it needs time to search the topics and photos.

I've just had a look through my old posts.. I know I have a photo set of the process on webshots but I can't get to the site from work... I'll see what I can sort out later.

On the ramps for jack access subject get yourself some of these.

They are absolutely superb and very light. They're a kind of foam but strong

Hi Culminator,
I had both wings off of my car recently so I may be able to help you with this task.
1. Remove lock nut grubb screw from both front wheels and loosen hub nuts.
2. Use scissor jack placed under lower suspension arm to gradually raise each wheel, placing thin wood pieces under each tyre in turn until high enough to get trolly jack under car. (I raised car high enough to place axle stands each side of chassis & removed trolly jack)
3. Remove front wheels.
4. Undo locking nut on headlight clamping bracket, unscrew knob & ease bracket off of hinge pegs.
6. Un plug electrics from each head light unit.
7. Un plug indicators & pull off side repeaters.(only if removing front apron)
8. Gently ease H/Light unit forward away from wing and remove.
9. Undo two bolts per side on forward bonnet catch plates.
10.Remove bonnet hinge plates front & rear & lift off bonnet in one piece (no need to remove bonnet if removing just one wing)
11.Undo nut & bolt on grill panel corners to wings.
12.Remove grill bolts top & bottom - remove grill & panel
13.Looking down through headlight aperture you'll see a connecting plate which ties the wing to the lower front apron. Undo each side to finally free up each wing.
14.Gently ease front of wing upwards away from location on front apron & when free, pull wing forwards to release from rear slot location at runner board.
15.Whilst left wing is removed, may as well carry out oil change as filter is located under left wing.
16.Whilst grill panel is removed, check/top up power steering fluid.
