My '74 4/4 will be getting some paintwork attention this spring/summer and one of the things that needs addressing is the front wing outer edge profile. In places the profile is missing presumably due to repairs over the years.I've no idea what's under the paint yet but there is metal there (passes the magnet test). It looks like the rear 10 inches of the front wings have been replaced without any attempt to re-profile the edges which shows a bit of lack of attention but there are other places also. I'm a bit loath to strip back to bare metal at the moment as I don't want to leave any bare metal exposed longer than I have to. Other than completely new wings (not going to happen!) is there any method that forum members are aware of that will enable me to reconstruct the missing sections. Current thinking is using body filler and a profiling mould.

Edit: I believe my wings have what is called a swaged edge with a wire bead. I see that the aluminium wings have this profile by glueing a moulding onto the (flat) edge of the wing.

I had similar on my 79 +8 , almost impossible to completely cure. Try building up with a resin and mat mix, comes readymixed, then finish with a a good aluminum filler. Can be hard work, and l found it had to be re done every three years.yuu will need to take back to bare metal on the edges to get the fillers to bind.

Wouldn't recommend body filler in that particular area as likely to chip off. If I was to build up the edges I'd probably use body lead instead of filler.

I'll be going back to bare metal anyway just to see what has been done in the past. I'd roughen up the metal considerably before applying any filler.
Would lead work? I know it's used for seams where it is filling a recess but could it be melted to form a raised area? Presumably the panel would need to be horizontal.

I may have misled you with the filler , use only for the fine end work.do the build up with resin and glassfibrei for strength .

I just did this repair on my 70 4/4. Cut out all the rust and replace it with new steel. The rolled edge can be formed with a set of offset dies in ahead roller and then closed up around the wire using a hammer and dolly. Alternately, find a used wing that is wicked in the front and cut off the back for a.repair panel.
