I agree, once they were referred to as the leadership, now it seems the phrase the polesters biggest employer would be better applied. In some ways the forced nature and schedule of the change using the deadline can stimulate growth in the UK car industry which does employee a lot of people but dressing it up in the emperors new clothes just makes it look questionable. Then I think of Kyoto and the objective and just see a knee jerk reaction to a bigger and more critical issue so i shut my trap given I don't have a magic wand.




Fair point but they are more like the cannon fodder and the ranks of permanent advisors and scientists that are also employed by the Government should be more visible and accountable. Lets take the excellent case of Chris Whitty where the supporting cast of the government has proven skilled, aware and successful. So name me one more that has done the same for other elements of .gov strategy ? NHS enablement to remove the vast range of limitations within the built system? Reducation in complexity and hence hiding holes of the tax system?

Scientific advice? scientists quite often don't agree with each other, don't forget the push to diesel UK had to tow the line on CO2 targets or face heavy penalties, I couldn't possibly imagine which engine manufacturers profited from this? oh hold on the lying cheating ones

As for the Lithium scare nonsense you read on this forum oh waily waily! They are already investing in recycling facilities to reprocess batteries and reuse the materials again in new batteries as it's to valuable a resource to let it go to waste. We are all still waiting for the fabled mythical batteries made from bunny wabbit kisses, turning a 5x5 cm test cell in a lab to a large scale manufacturing process is where they struggle and a lot of these startup companies with magic answers are ropey at best.

Lithium is the 25th most common element in the earth's crust, but because it is so reactive it is never found in its free state, but it is found everywhere.
Extracting it is energy demanding and vast amounts of electricity are needed, so recycling batteries may be soon be economically viable.

I agree with Milligoon: scientist often disagree, but sadly much research is externally funded by organisations with a vested interest, and it always is prudent not to upset the people controlling the money. So dissenting voices often don't get muck exposure...

I'd be deeply concerned if they didn't. The entire scientific method depends on the proposal, exploration, testing, and validation of hypotheses, out of which theories are constructed and consensus reached.

As we learn more over time, theories are tested, found wanting, and discarded or used for only a restricted set of conditions - the perfect example being Newtonian mechanics. Inadequate to explain all conditions but still useful for most. Our knowledge and understanding is changing all the time, there are no immutable truths - save possibly the laws of Mathematics.

I'm constantly surprised by people's failure to understand how science works, but sadly I'm not in the least bit surprised by the willingness of politicians to declare that they are 'following the science' when in fact they are doing no such thing at all.

I wonder if the political class were always so corrupt, and without any sort of morality?

Wherever you look today, there are self serving individuals who talk a good job, but fail to deliver anything meaningful.

It seems to be everywhere.

I believe that it has ever been so, the difference is now we can find out easily.
