It looks like Mohair, the working direction is side to side, you can try the above advice but I doubt it will work, it would probably work if there was tension on all sides but with sides that are in effect free they pull inwards as part of the pulling forces in a mesh.

Have a word with Shaun at Allon Whites, they are an approved Lotus trimshop. Cables may need tweaking they can advise.

Thanks for your answers so far. My secret wish would be if there was some kind of chemical to spray into the fabric and make it soft and elastic so that it becomes stretchy. Something that you would only have to do once to pull it to stretch.
But as it is, I will have to try the soak and sun method, and otherwise buy a new cloth. Because as it is, the rope is guaranteed to break soon, or worse, the grooves may break due to the great tension. Let's see, maybe I'll sign up for a Lotus forum as Richard recommends, but usually the members on TM are much nicer.

On my elise there were turnbuckle cable adjusters in the middle of the roof front & back that let you tighten or slacken the cables.
You just need to open the access flap in the headlining to get to them. Dead easy to do. I had to tighten mine on the drive home from the dealer when brand new as at 70mph I had a gap big enough to put my hand through between the top of the screen & the hood.
