Peter, good idea that thumbs , I've often wondered about moving the breakdown wheel change items out of the tool tray location

Peter,
a good idea and one I keep thinking about. I had two concerns on your idea as I drive in all weathers.
1. How do you keep the jack clean, is that a special bag?
2. Those rubber bands even if nitrile (oil resistant) will fail. You don't want a jack bouncing around under there. I would suggest a different way to tie it down.
3. Where is the knock off spanner?

John,

1. No, no special bag. It is made of a thick plastic (welded with wife's iron... a special "welding" adhesive for plastics could be also used), with two closures (you can see them in the photo). Absolutely dust and water proof. For example the plastic foil used for garden ponds is suitable. A nice box would probably be more elegant (just for the feeling it is tidy and nice also under the spare wheel smile. Still looking for one. The box could be mounted to the spare wheel base, so no sorrows regarding failing rubbers.
2. I agree, I had these doubts also. However, those rubber bands I used are tested - I have been using them for 20 years on a different car,
also exposed on the chassis, they are like new, no traces of wear. Hence, I used them. With new one of unknown quality, I probably would seek another solution (or to use two of them, the likelihood they will fail at the same time isn't that big one. Maybe I will replace them, but still didn't find the right solution.
3. I have 2-eared spinners, so no need of the knock-off spanner.

Great idea to store the tools under the sparewheel!

Yesterday I start building my tooltray. With a lot of inspiration the idea was a topplate made of 2mm aluminium, the bottom area with 1.5mm
and the sidewalls with 1mm.

Working and bending some things with 1mm Aluminium in the past I was very optimistic to work with the 2mm. Very easy to cut it with my
electic METABO saw the first step was done in few minutes. Than the things change... to get much place as possible the idea was the rear downwall „just bend a little down about 90degrees“.

But not a minute later the thinking was: ups, easy speak, hard to do. After a lot of minutes the thinking goes more critical and the words harder. And after half an hour I make a break and stop at this point. Just remember the words here and in Mr. Was book 1.5 is the thing
you can handle... Real.

Today the next try.

Summary: trust in the words and experience of other poeple ;-)

My garage is remote from home, about ¼ mile, so carry a wide range of tools comfortably fitting in aluminium tool tray. Most are carried in a custom tool roll made from an old rugby shirt and include the following:

Range of open ended and ring ratchet spanners from 6mm to 19mm with popular sizes duplicated.
¼" square drive ratchet with a few small sockets and set of matching Allen key sockets
4 screwdrivers of various sizes
Stanley knife
Small adjustable spanner
Long nosed pliers
Tape
Cable ties

Then I have:
Small aircraft size ⅜" square drive socket set
Jack and handle
Spinner removal tool
Soft Thor hammer
Vaseline
Spare bulbs
Polishing cloths and small jar of polish
Octopus bungy strap
Small block of wood

Heavy bits are wrapped in cloth material. OTT for most I imagine, but have explained the reason.

No gaffer tape, WD40 or baling wire? .... it's also amazing what you can hold together with jubilee clips at a push smile

You do right! .... it might be a reflection on the age of my fleet but I feel poitively naked driving out without a decent toolkit in the car.

May have to remove some of the less essential stuff to keep the back end weight down when we add swmbo's clothing essentials? for impending touring holiday.

Chaps, for those who are interested, I've finally installed my tool tray for my 2016 roadster with the 5 link upgrade. Super happy with it. For those who need a drawing , please let me know !!

I just need somewhere to drive with it now!!

About 15month :-o later - today I finished my tooltray.

At first thank to all here, who give me some help. At some times I thought: I‘ll never finish it. But now it‘s a very good thing to made one and fight against all worries.

At first my tooltray is different to the most others here, the measure in the rear isn‘t so deep that I can store the jack. So I built a „special“ housing with a deeper ground in the area of the axle. The next point is the wiringloom, to keep enough space I bend my tooltray in this area about 1/2“ in. Also for the wiring for the fuelpump I build an extrahousing.

But in the end I bought an Porsche Jack which is much smaller and less heavy.

Just an hour ago all stuff is stored and I look forward for a testdrive in hope no hits and dents.

When it works I clue some silicone for weatherproof it in and also some rubber against the rattle.

A good birthday present for her third birthday. I think it‘s an good idea to change from factory plastic to something homemade.

Greets René
