I have never driven my M3W in the rain, but have made number cross country trips by motorcycle. One suggestion, put your rain gear on and go out in a real rain storm and try it out. Something as small a a drip down your neck or a leaking crotch seam will turn into a Chinese water torture over the space of a few hours. Best investment I have made is a premium Gore Tex Pro suit and a quality full face helmet. I also agree with PaulV suggestion on a good roll top dry bag. Of course, you could try not to drive in bad weather, but that can put you in a motel for days.

I-40 is about as good an Interstate ride as it gets! You will read on some sites that the road surface (in areas) is deteriorating, but I didn't find that to be the case two years ago.

Final suggestion- When planning your trip, account for break downs, side excursions, etc. If you try to tear across the country like an over the road truck driver, you will miss so much. Nothing better than those unexpected stops at road side what-evers, to make the trip memorable. Seeing those private tractor museums, worlds largest ball of string, etc, will make the trip. And try to always eat at a local restaurant. That's where you get the real feel for the area. In a local diner, you will meet the most interesting people and have the greatest conversations, which is what it is all about! Take lots of pictures and keep a simple diary/log.

After doing some research I decided Skyline Drive would be a better fit for this time of year as they aren’t currently reporting any closures. I’ll save Blue Ridge for the spring, which is a-okay with me.

RAM mount on its way. A heated jacket for the first few days for driving too. Haven’t decided on GoPro and I don’t have goggles yet - I usually only wear sunglasses. Do you guys recommend goggles for comfort or for looks? I can’t imagine goggles being very comfortable. Any specific brand for me to try out?

I’ll be bringing some box wrenches, allens, spark socket, spare tube, and spare rectifier. Any other tools/spares? I imagine if certain things go I will just have to make due or abort - can’t bring the entire shop with me.

If your OEM fuel pump has not been swapped out for the Walbro pump ( https://www.mtwc.co.uk/wp-content/u...l-pump-replacement-April-2020-update.pdf ) then I would either do it before leaving or take the kit with you.

Thanks for the tip. I'll inquire about the Walbro pump. It seems like a relatively inexpensive and easy upgrade.

Thanks for the tip & encouragement on the I-40. I feared it might be too straight and boring of a drive as I stick to backroads and old highways around me, but I can't afford more than a few weeks for this trip. Looking forward to it and all the side excursions.

I'll keep a log, take plenty of photos and possibly add a GoPro to the trip. Roll top dry bag is all set - I'll consider some quality rain gear next.

If 1-up, then choose a waterproof bag for the passenger footwell (I drive with the half tonneau on). Water bottle in bag on the passenger seat, sat-nav or phone on the RAM mount under the tonneau to be shaded. Suitable headware and goggles of course (agree, helmet for freeways - insect or stone kicked up by a tire would not be nice). Easy access to waterproofs and if touring in Summer appropriate sun protection. Carry at least 1 inner tube, maybe AAA etc list of local tire shops to help with any fixes (for long distances I might be tempted to buy a new wheel+tire and put it on the trunk rack like classic M3Ws!). Optionally add a GoPro on the headrest as a "dashcam" to record more interesting experiences, but note when you get out it adds to the list of thinks to secure before leaving the car.

Most important, have fun and post photos here smile

If you recommend any specific goggles please advise as I currently don't own any - I simply count on my sunglasses but might be nice to try something new.

Also bear in mind that some states consider 3 wheelers motorcycles and require helmets even though Morgan's
have steering wheels and seat belts. Some of them are real aholes about it. Research the laws in the states you
plan on going through. Also laws on eye protection.
Once you are west of Oklahoma City 40 more are less follows old 66 and there are interesting side trips. Should
be able to research online. There are some good books on traveling 66 but you may not have time to get them.

I use Bolle pilot goggles over glasses. Works well with a driving cap on single carriage roads, but for faster freeways / dual carriageways I use a Shoei open-face with visor for the added noise and object protection smile

the parkway is "closed" all winter which is to say, it is "posted closed" as they do not clear snow or ice. The fact of the matter is that the road is open. On Occasion, they do close gates after a bad snow.

Let me know when you are coming through, as I only live 26 miles from the parkway

Also, be aware that most lodging on the parkway may be closed for the winter. So make reservations in advance to make sure they are open. Most of the towns to the side are "straight down" so fun driving. It is about a day to get from Front Royal to hwy 8 and down to Floyd VA and Floyd has lodging and is kind of an old hippy town. We live just 20 miles from Floyd so maybe we could meet up
