Skiing in Scotland

Still a chill in the air round here. Skiing closed obviously, but scenery still here and waterfall still turned on, the time will come when everyone can visit again but in the meantime, here’s what you’re missing.

It’s not the cold that bothers them, you won’t see them roaming as it’s breeding season just now, they’re hunted to near extinction on the run up to Burns night. They’re so shy, it takes them weeks of wooing to pluck up the courage to breed and the deed itself is only performed under the heather on the darkest nights. They’ll then remain hidden from view for several more weeks while they get over the embarrassment of what they have done, by which time, spring has sprung and baby haggis are everywhere, the circle of life as they say.

On top of all that, they're possibly still in hiding after one of them was kidnapped at gunpoint and sent into space!!!

Do they still have 3 legs longer than the others, so they can run along steep hills without falling over ?

No Jon, two short legs on one side, two long legs on the other. Can't remember which side is Which though, it's been a long time since I seen one in the flesh. laugh2

Just found the answer, hope this clears up any myths, Wikipedia states some are left handed and some are right, I dispute this. Surely they would collide whilst running around the hills in opposite directions?

If I’d know, I’d have given you a toot, I see you joined ages ago but haven’t often posted, do you still have a Morgan?

As I read your post, it reminded me of something that happened about 35 years ago, we had a school ski day at the Lecht but the weather closed in and blocked all the roads. The whole class had to be rescued from the car park and we spent the night on the floor of the Allergue Arms pub.

May be of interest to you. Percy Topliss - the monocle'd mutineer shot the local policeman in a bothy about about half a mile away from there. Stole his bike and cycled to a to a village called Alford. He then caught a train to Aberdeen and headed South.

Still have the Morgan. My email on the website is wrong, and I can't seem to get it changed. I just sent you a private message with contact details.
I have loads of stories about the Allargue (Briigies)!

Had to look him up:
Originally Posted by Wikipedia}Francis Percy Toplis (22 August 1896 – 6 June 1920) was a British criminal and imposter active during and after the First World War. Before the war he was imprisoned for attempted rape. During the war he served as a private in the Royal Army Medical Corps, but regularly posed as an officer while on leave, wearing a monocle. After the war he became notorious following the murder of a taxi driver and the wounding of a police officer who attempted to apprehend him. The manhunt was major news at the time. He was tracked down and killed in a gunfight with police.

In 1978 a book was published which claimed that he had a big part in the Étaples Mutiny from 9–12 September 1917, as "The Monocled Mutineer". The authors suggested that he was pursued by the political establishment in a vendetta and may have been innocent of the murder. The book was dramatised by the BBC in 1986 as The Monocled Mutineer, creating considerable controversy.

Critics say that there is no evidence he was present and that official records show that Toplis's unit was en route to India during the Étaples mutiny. However, the official records that are often cited to refute claims that Toplis took part in the Mutiny have been extrapolated from a summary of his movements that appear in a letter addressed to the Chief Constable of Hampshire Police from Superintendent James L. Cox.[1
The letter, dated 17 May 1920, describes how Toplis was deployed to the Dardanelles at the outset of war in 1915 with a Field Ambulance Company, was wounded and sent home and "then went on trooping duty to Salonika, Egypt and back to the Depot and then to India in the Troopship 'Orontes'”. Sadly, the letter from Superintendent Cox makes no mention of a 'wanted notice' that featured in the Police Gazette dated 18 Oct 1918 which states that Toplis deserted from Salonika on 15 June that same year.[2] The six-month 'hard labour' sentence served by the Nottingham magistrate in December 1918[3] suggests Toplis did not see out his service days in Egypt or Bombay as some have alleged. As Percy's British Army Service Records have not been retained by the MOD, precise details about his movements remain unclear. With the exception of Cox's letter and a Medal Card,[4] no other official records of his service history exist. Despite the omission of actual dates in Superintendent Cox's summary of his movements during the war, many historians feel it is unlikely that Toplis was in France to participate in the mutiny.

There is a lot more on the page. I'd never heard of him! smile
