Good morning all,

I was doing a bit of reading last night and saw that a vented cam cover was mentioned, is this something the factory did on later cars or was it a modification elsewhere?
I presume in response to the heat issues around the cam belt.

I was curious to see a picture of one to compare against the original (mine has what I presume is the original with spacers).

The factory supplied cover has a slot horizontally cut below the rib near the bottom before chrome plating. If you want to diy the mod I would advise a series of drilled holes which will leave a better support for the chrome plating which might start to peel from the long edge of a slot. Just to add Nick, the factory 'vented' cam belt cover simply consisted of washers added to mount bolts between crankcase and cover.

The later models have a machined standoff so no washers and no slot in the face.

hi my 2017 has both the 2 horizontal slots and the machined standoff in place of the washers.
I took mine off today to have a look at the belt. There was a lot of belt dust. Is this normal or
is my belt about to go bad?

Interesting, so sounds like three variants:

- Washers added to the mount bolts (as per mine)
- A horizontally cut slit below the rib
- A machined standoff

Does anyone have a picture of the final one (machined standoff)?

After having oil drip on my belt via the vent gap I am keen to explore a better solution than the washers incase it drips again..

The shavings are normal - you need to check the belt regularly for cracks & clear & clean plus change the belt on condition.

thanks, I cleaned the belt dust and some oil drippings from the inside bottom of the cover.
Mine is a 2017 with 2 slots and machined spacers. Here is a photo (sorry not the best photo)

The belt debris is normal, as Mark says. S&S describe it as "snake skin" and it is the release agent from belt manufacture. There is also a cutout at the base of the cam cover that has been there since the start, probably to let the crank seal oil leakage out. I like the machined spacers on the later covers, I just super glue the washers in place to make things easier.

There does seem to have been a bad batch of belts about and they have shown signs of cracking after just a few thousand miles, well worth checking them regularly. In theory the belt life is 3 years or 30,000 miles (with the vented cover) but "on condition" seems sensible. It is a "safe" engine as the valves and pistons don't try and occupy the same space if the cam belt fails, always nice to know.
