Thanks Bob, I had a feeling things had changed, but only ever experienced the original (we called them van) tyres. The originals were not great!

Thank you for this very valuable information, Ivormog. This really explains why the Conti is rated so much better in wet value than the one up to 2018. Conti should advertise it... "The new CT22" now it is better than its reputation"...
It is a pity that a brand new 4/4 had never seen the new Conti CT22. (Not necessarily a pitty because of the new tyre, but because of the great car model that was dropped). So the new CT22 might be an alternative.
Still regarding the T-Trac 2, it was just like that a few years ago. I bought my first set new. After that, there was no production in the 165/80/15 dimension for more than two years. And when I needed new tyres later, the dimension was available again.

Thanks IvorMog, that is very informative and makes sense.
I have a few days to decide before accepting the Conti offer, it's starting to be more appealing, as I say particularly on the availability front. i now need to ensure i am not being offered 2017 tyres?

Continental makes some excellent tyres, but the OE tyre on the 4/4 is not one of them. Its performance is acceptable, but not very good, on dry surfaces. The problem is that in other circumstances, you can switch from modest grip to zero grip without any warning. The splendidly-named Henry Catchpole, who is a highly competent driver, ran a 4/4 as his EVO magazine long-termer. He memorably described the Contis as "trailer tyres" .
I ditched my original Contis long before they were worn out and switched to Vredestein Classic. This tyre is far superior on both dry and wet roads..

Has anyone actually used the Conti's and lived to tell the tale? Well 1/2 spun my 4/4 in the wet at 25 mph coming off a round about. Unfortunately enough kinetic energy left to contact the Armco. £10500 later back on the road. Never again will I use Continentals on a 4/4. With the continentals I regularly got a slight lock up of the fronts just coming up to stationary traffic. I have not experienced this since, with CRZ or vredestein sprints.

I have a background in the tyre industry although not specifically with car tyres.
I have been intrigued why some people like the Conti's and some, me included, hate them. So I spoke with their technical department about the tyre construction and compound etc.
Whilst they obviously would not give away any of their proprietary information, they did tell me that the tyre originally went into production in 1994 and was unchanged until 2018.
Then it underwent a major redesign of both the carcass and the compound to bring it up to "modern standards"
The redesign went into production in the back end of 2018.
The new design had a slight improvement in rolling resistance from F to E but crucially, a big improvement in wet grip from E to B. Tyre noise stayed the same.
So, It might well be worth giving the Conti's another chance.

When I bought my pre used 4/4 in 2015 Contis were fitted. In the first year I had some terrible experiences on wet and dry roads! So I switched to TT2. A massive improvement! If the currant Contis now ar much better than the old version I am interested to get informations. If possible I would go for the TT2 to avoid a risk... but if the TT2 are not available...

So, the obvious question that needs to be asked..... Having been scared witless by a previous experience of Conti Ct 165/80/15 on a 4/4, has anyone been brave/foolish enough to try the new improved (?) post 2018 version? Looking online at various reviews, they certainly seem mixed. some of the reviews in the last year or so, seem more favourable from MG & Triumph owners. However if they had a clue would they drive an MG or Triumph?  (I've had both in the '80's. only joking!)

To be quite honest, I would not like to be the guinea pig for the newer CT22s. They are also almost 1.8 kg heavier than T-Trac 2 as a circulating mass. I would look at what the other brands/types have for reviews...even if they are different dimensions in the review. And they must be tested on passenger cars, not on heavier SUVs or vans.

Heinz, we may as well forget the T-Trac2 in the current time frame?
Here in the UK, those of asking the question are unable to buy them at the moment, when and if they become available is another quesyion? Certainly not one that Vredstein seem to be able to answer?
As I have found online reviews are spurious at best, especially when we didin't know a tyre had been updated until IvorMog was good enough to inform us.
Based on reviews, the T-Trac does appear to be the one to have, even for those fortunate to have them fitted, they are unlikely to last forever.
