With the eclectic membership of MSCC I am sure there will be a plumbing or hydraulics expert who can answer this conundrum.

The cistern in the downstairs toilet developed a violent water hammer. I found that the float on the ballcock, a stout plastic 150mm sphere in perfect condition, was nearly full of water. I cannot see any orifice through which the water could have entered and nor can I remove the water without puncturing the ball.

The question is: how the Devil did the water get in there?

New balls are available from Amazon.

I am no plumber though the spheres are usually screwed on to the arm that operates the valve. IF that is the case, then perhaps the seal between the screw fixing and the sphere is suspect. Again if the sphere/float can be unscrewed then blowing air into the threaded link point in it might show up the point of leakage...?

Good luck.
