Wondered if people were taking it easy for a few hundred miles or giving it the beans from the word go?

Also, at what rev reading do you find the change-up light illuminating?

I would take it easy for the first 1000 miles, as its not just the engine that needs to be run in. However, the light blue car owned by Aero Racing has from day one been driven in races and on track days, and the car goes very well and the engine feels lose and responsive.

The red light comes on at about 7k revs, but its quite hard to achieve as you are going well past the speed limit (even the one being proposed by the Government). I have done it in second and just about in third gear but you need to take it to a track day rather than pick up a fine and three points!

Thanks for that Richard. I was indeed at Prescott. I collected my car from there. My first drive in it was up the hill :-) Just trying to get some miles on it now while thinking of a few upgrades. Smaller steering wheel might help. Maybe tyres, racing seat......Be on the start grid before you know it!

the change indicator lights at about 7000 rpm, but as things are usually getting busy then, I can't be more accurate. There is a soft cut off a little beyond this, maybe 7500rpm.

I ran mine for a few hundred miles, and then a gentle 15 mins at Castle Combe. Oil and filter change, then a not so gentle 30 mins at race pace.

I had a slight oil leak around the cooler, which was cured by tightening.

One 30 minute race and one 50 minute race since, both at 28C without any signs of overheating. Not a single issue, I'm impressed, very impressed.

What oil are you guys using ? I'm getting my car next week.

Valvoline VR1 racing, but it is raced. I'll probably use a regular fully synthetic over the winter. I have used Morris oils in the past, they deliver and often have good offers. As the engine is the Mazda version of the Duratec with variable valve timing, try checking what Mazda recommend.

Variable valve timing, should have read variable cam timing, the same sort of thing but quite different!

I have been having a look as oil grades as well, I havn't yet found any info on the correct grade.

Mazda specify 5W/30 for the Mk3 and Mk3.5 MX5. They are not specific on semi or fully synthetic. Changed after 1 year / 12,500 miles.
