As this lockdown grinds slowly on I have heard many radio adverts by the mainstream manufacturers seeking to maintain sales volume while the restrictions continue. BMW for example are promoting their online car configurator with the option of 'click and collect' or delivery to the customer's home, and other brands are also promoting this business model. If I was in car sales for the one of the mainstream brands and currently on furlough I would be very worried about future career prospects!

I got out in 1990s, it wasn't Click & Collect that was the threat, it was female's that would work for half the salary.

Click & collect also exists in the second hand car market. I have read of folk buying circa £50k sports cars without ever seeing them.... I guess some folk have much more money to gamble with than do I..

Dean, seems reducing income expectations may have been a pre-requsite in the labour market for some time now..? What the Covid effect might add to the rate of re-set, would seem to be anyone`s guess..?

I understand Volvo are looking to close their dealerships in favour of on-line sales and are bringing forward the full launch of Volvo Valet, a contactless collection and delivery option for cars that need servicing or repair.

I have been looking at buy a car through Cinch site works well with a two weeks return policy.

Our neighbour has utilised this Valet service this week and the garage is Kastners Volvo in Exeter so a 90 mile round trip for an MOT and annual service and at no extra cost to the customer allegedly.

We bought Heather’s GTI online a year ago from Lancaster VW and they delivered it on a flat bed with good biosecure methods in place, it was a very particular spec and colour that she wanted hence the long distance purchase. I wouldn’t hesitate doing it again from a reputable dealer.

Just great when it all works out wonderfully well, though I have heard of at least a coupe of stories of second hand car sales that went less than well over too many years even when the tyres have been well and truly kicked by the purchaser in the showroom...

As for buying old and "Classic" cars I have read the terms and conditions of one high value purveyor of such machinery where the it reads along the lines of we are selling collector cars and not transport... or words very much to that effect, talk about covering one`s rear..!!!

The online business model seems to move pricing power back in favour of the vendor as it removes the opportunity for negotiation

There was still plenty of room for negotiation on line and telephone, we engineered the flat bed delivery into the equation, no part exchange and the sales ladies name was Morgan so it was always going to work.
