I am not an Apple fan-boy but do appreciate what Steve Jobs contributed to the computer industry, including my ability to browse Talk Morgan on an iPad from any room in the house with ease.

RIP to an American entrepreneur who excelled in putting creative teams together and coming up with some revolutionary products, all of which are easy for even technophobes to use.

I fully endorse your sentiments, Trent. I was allowed to cut my 'computer teeth' on an early 'Apple IIe' and a Visicalc Floppy Disc in the early 1970's.

Steve Jobs was probably unknown to the wider world in those days. Even then the Apple performance and functionality outstripped the Commodore Pet which was the other business desktop available then.

Steve was far too young an age to be taken from us.

Following so closely to the passing of Chris Lawrence, it seems that the worlds innovators and pioneers are leaving us too fast.

They basically invented the consumer PC and perhaps even more crucially were all about networking when DARPANET was in its infancy. They brought the world much closer for both professionals and consumers and for every mistake (Newton) they came back much stronger (iPad).

People will say, oh, but the iPod wasn't the first MP3 player. No, technically it wasn't, but you can't remember what the first was because the iPod changed the game so vastly - especially with the introduction of iTunes - that nobody could really picture using anything else. It reminds me of television: Logie Baird may have demonstrated the first TV, but it was a mechanical system that even then was pushing its natural limits. It took someone with vision like Philo Farnsworth to set the standard that everyone else copied and used for the next 70 years.

It's a rare hybrid of new technology/ideas made user-friendly whilst retaining class-leading aesthetics to the point whereby a company built an entire culture.

Steve Jobs may have once said that he being the richest man in the cemetery didn't motivate him but he built it into the world's second largest company. A company based on ideas and belief rather than being lucky enough to exploit natural resources.

Oh, and Pixar.

A sad day for us all, as he has touched many of our lives. May he rest in peace.

Difficult to add anything significant to all that's been said. Steve Jobs' death represents the loss of a really great thinker with a wonderful approach to creative change. On the radio yesterday someone likened Steve Jobs to Henry Ford who was apparently quoted as saying "if I had asked my customers what improvement they most wanted that would have said 'a faster horse'". Apple certainly introduced some dynamic changes in the world of technology. A great loss and a death at way too young an age.

The name "Apple Computer"

A lot of people wonder where the name "Apple Computer" came from, as it is a rather unusal name for a computer company.
Steve Jobs came up with the name in early 1976. At the time, he was often visiting and working on a small farm friends of his owned. It was a hippie commune where Steve spent a few months of the year.
When he returned from one of those stays, he told Steve Wozniak about his idea. Jobs probably was working on apple plantages. Or he just wanted their startup to be in front of Atari in the phone book. Or it was a tribute to Apple Records, the music label of the Beatles.
Whatever the true origin of the name was, Woz knew instantly that they were going to be in trouble with Apple Records sooner or later. But as they were unable find a name that sounded better than Apple Computer, the name was chosen.
Woz's worries turned out to be justified. Apple Computer, Inc. was sued by Apple Records over trademark violations in 1989.
