Surely you will get a "check engine" light if you have no speedometer input to the ECU. Amongst other things the vehicle speed input controls the idle fuel mapping. With the speedometer working the ECU will have all it's required inputs again to work correctly?

After 8 years of operation, the odometer has operated for about 4 years intermittently and has never been specially associated with the chekengine.
