There has been an update on MOT requirements on LED headlamp conversions see this thread in Maintenance & Servicing http://www.talkmorgan.com/ubbthreads.php/topics/694863/1 Basically you cannot use LED headlamp bulbs in a post April 1968 car. If you want LED headlamps you need to replace the whole unit, reflector & lens not just bulb.

Some of the LED replacement bulbs I have seen will be quite a bit different optically than the original filament designs in terms of origin of light vs the focal point of the reflector/projector.
So there is some logic to the latest regulation change.
We fitted one of the LED full replacement units to our 2012 M3W and like others we found that went through the last MOT OK and is a great improvement for night driving...hope the next MOT will be OK....

Seems that there's quite a clamp-down on LED conversions now. Whilst I agree that LED bulbs in halogen units can be very bad with cheap LED bulbs (less so with properly designed and suitable expensive Phillips type replacements) and produce nasty glare, full replacement LED 7" units as many have on M3W's have been accepted before. In fact Wipac make a fully compliant, glare-free version for retrofit, as seen on many Land Rover 90's etc. However, even these are now outlawed on post '86 vehicles, which is a shame, as they are correctly patterned and improve safety at night hugely. Will be interesting to see how those with the replacement units get on at next MoT time. DVSA Link for MoT ChangesWipac Replacement Units

I wonder why the Wipac LED headlamps you linked to are outlawed, unless it's due to lack of "E" mark of course. They seem to fit the bill in other respects being a fully integrated LED unit.

Good question, but they specifically state;
"For class 3,4,5 and 7 vehicles, the defect ‘Light source and lamp not compatible’ only applies to vehicles first used on or after 1 April 1986.
Should a vehicle be presented for an MOT test with conversions before 1 April 1986 they must not be failed with immediate effect.
Vehicles presented with converted halogen headlamp units first used on or after 1 April 1986 will continue to be failed."
So it's down to interpretation by the tester perhaps. Time will tell.

So it's down to interpretation by the tester perhaps. Time will tell. It specifically says 'converted halogen headlamp' - the WIPAC units are dedicated LED headlamps, not converted halogen. A converted halogen headlamp is a lamp designed for halogen bulbs that you've fitted with LED bulbs.

That was my thinking as well.
Also it wouldn't fail on "the light source and lamp not compatible" as its its a complete assembly.
My only reservation would be whether they were E Marked.
It would be good to have headlamps brighter than the blue main beam warning light in the cabin.
