After reading this set of posts I contacted Rog to get a set of his bump stops. Fitting took about an hour or so, and after a few drives I’ve set the gap at 36.5mm

Bought a set of internal callipers from Axminster Tools, and then use a vernier to measure the gap. Found this easier than using blocks of wood.

Still get the odd bang, the roads in rural Lancashire can be pretty poor, but now it’s 1 to 2 a trip, rather than 1 to 2 a mile! The road between Bacup and Hebden Bridge is guaranteed to provide plenty of suspension noise.

When we get some fine weather going to try closing the gap by a couple of mm

Very pleased with the results, and Rog’s help and advice was most useful - thanks.

If anybody likes watching paint dry this is for you... Twenty minutes of gripping ‘spring assist’ action. I won’t spoil the whole movie but here’s some teasers. There’s a nice bit of spring tramp starting at 7mins 20 sec’s. The fuel tank leaps up in the air at 6mins 19sec’s (see this link here, do all cars do this?) and towards the end if you are watching full screen a special guest, the resident agrilus planipennis - enter bottom stage right.

Stops set at 32mm

Obviously too much time on my hands…. smile

The tank shouldn't move. It should be bolted down. See photo

Great Vid Roger. Interesting that the stops only come in contact with the springs by a small amount, as expected. Must check my fuel tank mounts next time I do some work on the car. Your bump stops have transformed the ride on my car. I am now around 30mm, mainly due to the rear springs starting to sag. The drivers side has dropped by 5mm since fitment

Interesting video.
But if MMC has specified better shocks that include bump stop rubbers the mod wouldn't be needed.
When will car, and bike, makers realise that by value engineering they provide opportunity for aftermarket suppliers that then cream off their potential profit?
It happens time and time again.

The Spax that SSL sell have built in bumpstops. I did read that AVO had them, but can't be sure.

AVO’s do appear to have little PU bump stops or buffers. The pics below are with the dust covers slid down off of the fixing eye. The top one is a new and the bottom one is an old one I removed from my new to me car. The bump stop was broken and rattling around under the cover when I removed it (both sides were the same).
