Can anyone advise why the two bare aluminium panels on the sills either side of the seats are not covered or trimmed in leather or carpet? Shown below, between the steering wheel and handbrake.
I would love to cover these over, but wonder if it is left exposed for a particular reason?

I think it is part of the design aesthetic, i.e. it is to 'show off' the aluminium chassis underpinnings.

The construction was pretty innovative for cars in general and certainly for MMC when introduced ......

I'm guessing there is no reason why you couldn't cover it with leather if that is your choice (except you will probably upset the 'traditionalists' innocent !)

I've often wondered the same, they look so unfinished as standard, or do the fuel pipes / wiring run behind the panels?

I agree I always thought it looked a little out of place even if it was to show it was not ash!
They get a little warm if you are pressing on so do protect the back of the leather if you do cover them.
It would be worth a call to one of the seasoned garages to ask if there is any access requirement just in case.

Thanks for your replies guys, I don't like the look of these panels and feel it give it a bit of a "work in progress" look to the cockpit. Plus it leaves alloy oxide marking on the side of my seats, they're not visible - but I know they're there nono .

Good point Alistair, I've just got some sound and heat proofing to do the floors and any other bare bits I can reach. I'm up with Techniques for a service & MOT soon, so will check it out with them.

Pretty sure that is part of the bonded chassis structure so isn't any form of access as it shouldn't be removed, was left there to show the new chassis as Charles Morgan was showing off the technology, and to a lesser extent I guess to prove its not wood!
I prefer them to be covered like in later cars, so I guess it just comes down to preference.

I do not think there is any "technical" reason behind, since in the Aero supersports they covered it.

It is the same on the Aero S4 Chassis Plus 8, there is only leather and carpet on show!

Scuff protection? My toy car might be leather but over the top down by the footwell is a stainless plate on top of the leather as a scuff preventer.

After ll, you dont expect leather floor mats do you?
