Nigel,
Is this for the 1.6 or 2.0 litre engine? I have a 2.0 which I bought new from the factory and kept in the UK for about 26 years. It was in storage and only used during home leaves from HK. Last time I took it out of storage before shipping it to the U.S. the inside of the tank had completely rusted out. Since mine(1986 fuel injection model) did not have a filter before or after the pump I went thru multiple pumps as each filled up with rust particles.
Don't know if the 1.6 has the same pump but following is what I replaced it with: Bosch Part # R18366A which was 54 pounds Sept. 2011. I added a Mann Filter WK 618 between the tank and pump. Bought six of them and changed after each time I drove it. Cheaper to throw away filters than pumps, but still went thru three pumps trying to keep it running long enough to make it to 60th Anniversary of +4 at Prescott. Also, M. Rutter drained the tank--ouch!
Petrol in Arizona was $ 1.30 cents a gallon U.S. gallon) or under a pound at that time for high test.
All these pumps and filters were bought from GSF Car Parts in Chadwell Heath, Essex. They say they have branches nationwide and their web is:
www.gsfcarparts.comAfter Prescott I shipped it to Arizona, bought new alloy tank, re-plumbed everything from tank forward and swapped out the fuel injection from Bosch/Magnetti to 1/2 of a Ford Mustang Mega Squirt with modern ECU.
Nothing wrong with the old system but hard to get parts here.
Swapping out the fuel pump is easy--I did it in the driveway of my sister-in-laws home multiple times. If you don't have a filter before the pump, plumb one in. Use filter with 12mm inlet and outlet.
Good luck.
