Hi all,

I was looking at a Morgan Roadster with the local owner and we noticed that two pipes at the front of the car were very low to the ground and vulnerable to speed bumps etc.

I was wondering if this was normal with the Roadster (2009) and if it is possible to somehow protect these pipes. They are about 120 mm from the road surface. I have shown the pipes in the picture.

I'm not sure to have such things under my 2008 roadster, I should have noticed this.

I just happened to be looking at a Roadster at the factory a few days ago and noticed just how low the oil cooler pipes were! I was rather more interested in how the lower grill was fitted though! The pipes do look very vulnerable though.

My Centenary Roaster 100 does not have an Oil Cooler or these pipes so both cars must be 'Specials'



Its a differerant angle to your pic but there are no low pipes.

The angled plate is a Sump Guard / Deflector plate to protect the lowest point which is the Sump.

Seems to be very poor design and significant risk.

for normal driving, you don't need that oil-cooler
unless you live in Nigeria

Brilliant, before wrecking your sump, dump the contents of the oil cooler over the road first...
Perhaps it's protective thing to help the sump glide over the road obstacle?
Unless it's for racing I think those are way too low. Don't suppose the cooler would fit the other way up?

Frank does your deflector plate assist with drawing air through the radiator too?

Graham, Thats exactly what I thought and not a good design by the factory. I suppose that if you take the pipes out on a bump, then you are likely to damage the sump as well. I don't think it is possible to turn it up the other way, but it is a possible idea.

Frank, Is the angled sump guard, a standard fitment of was it something you have made up.

1560, Not Nigeria, but I believe the owner does a lot of touring in the south of France, Italy and the Alps, so perhaps that why its fitted.

I drove our roadster during 2 years in a hot tropical environment, with high montains, in Reunion Isl. (near Mauritius Isl.) and it never got too hot, even in summer. Around 85° on the temp' gauge as usual.

And we are just back from Italy and Alps passes. Nothing happened as well.

I think this design is maybe made for hardcore racing in Gulf countries or the engine is not a regular one but a "boosted" one (electronicaly and so on) and need this adjustment to survive.

I certainly wouldn't leave it there as it's a disaster waiting to happen. Either do away with it, turn it the other way up, or replace it with a side-entry item.
