Unless you have to remove the bevel box for another reason, doing the seal replacement in situ is the better option. If you remove the BB you are doing a lot of unnecessary work for no gain. If you are paying a mechanic by the hour, then you are increasing the cost for nothing.

Adjusting the rear wheel alignment and belt tension (an article about doing this on the MTWC website links dated Jan 2018) doesn't reduce the amount of work to remove the BB much. Cutting and then bolting a plate over the brackets is a useful modification to do any way, it makes any future work on the propshaft easier.

Planenut, would you have any photos of the modification to the prop shaft safety cage?

This is a photo of the plated over cut in the propshaft safety cage. Not very sophisticated but you don't see it often laugh2 . If you do that to both of them it is then easy to bend the cage out of the way and remove the shaft.

I see, you are doing that to one side of each of the two hoops. Thank you for the photo. As a suggestion, drill and bolt the plate on first, then remove it and make the cut. It will reassemble much easier that way.

Nice solution Ian. Is it easy to bend? You really don't need to do plates on both sides?

Do you remember the size of the bolts & nuts you used? 4mm diameter? 6mm diameter? Other? And the length. Just to get to the workshop with all the correct stuff prepared! Thanks in advance!

After cutting, I would be inclined to make a single piece replacement strap (rounded top-no need for the double bends) with a single bolt on each end, bolt head welded to prevent rotation. Perhaps with bolt pointing out, so a quick removal with one wrench of the exposed nut.

The original metal hoops are 20mm x 3mm material and I used M6 nuts and bolts. It really isn't that critical, the strip of steel I used was just what I had to hand and is a bit larger than original but you get the idea. With a cut the hoops will bend enough to allow the propshaft to come out. Agreed that a new top hoop with a single nut each side would be a neater solution but this works, it doesn't hit the cover and you don't use it often.

Hello everyone!

I have a strange situation here... As you may know, my new bevel box leaked too. Nothing terrible but the classic front O ring seal leakage.

I purchased a new Viton O-Ring seal as I did not want the dealer to change it by a Nitrile one, that we know tends to fail.

Morgan Motor Company, based on the pictures that their dealer here in Madrid emailed them, sent back instructions of how to replace the seal. Including cutting the propshaft safety arches.

Now that all the work is done, the Morgan Motor Company tells their dealer here to give them the reference of the piece they changed (the seal). But as there is no part number in the Morgan manuals, the dealer can't give them a part number. And MMC refuse to pay until the dealer gives them the part number of the seal. But they can't because this part number that doesn’t exist in their data base!

Crazy… MMC tells the dealer to replace a seal and sends him the instructions of how to do it, and later they say that because there is no part number for the seal alone so they don’t assume the costs of the job.

Seriously?

Get the dealer to tell MMC that it was a standard Nitrile seal of whatever part number Morgan think it should be. Without pulling it all to bits again they will never know what is fitted. It is unlikely to leak and will be out of warranty if it does, so you can replace it yourself another time.

Just realised that it is because MMC don't do any parts for the Bevel Box, not the type of seal, sorry. Maybe list the next unit up, that being the bevel box? It will point to the stupidity of not doing any spare parts for large components such as the bevel box. It's like changing the engine if it needs a new rocker cover gasket almost.
