Had to sort out a poor earth on the wing top lights, and since I had some cheap Chinese bayonet led lamps lying about I thought I'd give them a try. Regardless of MOT/Regs issues/ illegality, these seem more prominent than the original incandescent wingtop lamp bulbs, so I might keep them in. I may try switching the side lamp bulbs in the headlamp unit also, so dipped beam in the daylight would be like DRL, but I wonder what effect that would have on main beam appearance, or would main beam over ride the weaker side light output? Has anyone else experimented similarly?

I put LED bulbs in my S1 side lights. They passed the MOT and as I understand it are legal. As the PCB was failing again I wired the lights to be permanently on side lights (thus not DRL) & that passes the MOT as 3.7l Roadsters are wired that way.
I also changed the headlights to have 1/2 ring of LEDs in them.
None of that stopped a white van T boning the car in broad dayligth on a straight road.

Thanks, that's good to know John- obviously not the T-Bone bit! I'll carry on experimenting a bit then- I've just upgraded to new Tribar lamps, which by virtue of being new are a marked improvement on the original clouded Wipac fitments, so "compliant" LED is a while away for now. Truthfully, my main objective is to overcome battery drain as I have a habit of leaving lights on, which becomes an issue in the lighter evenings...

I had that problem & wiring the side lights to the ignition not only solved it but made it safer I guess.

I have LED in all lights now (I bought JohnV6 bulbs to put in my bikes, but then thought 'sod it' and chucked them in the Mog).

Prior to that I just had LEDs in front sidelights (four - I have retro fitted headlights with a pilot bulb), rear lights and dash illumination (all bar alternator, which needs a conventional bulb). On an overnighter on the way to Cornwall last year I left them on from about 4.00pm to 8.00am. In the morning there was still enough juice in the battery to start her up! With convential bulbs she would have been dead by early evening.

Have now fitted a 'buzzer' to tell me I've left them on!

Yes, I think a simple buzzer, or US style ding dong will be simpler for me than ignition off. Presumably any lighting circuit positive, e.g rear lamp, with earth to body.

But how do you leave your side lights on if parking on the street at night in a position which requires them?

Or is that old outdated highway code thinking?

Not sure but it never failed the MOT & the wiring was done by a Mog dealer.
