Is it time to switch from ICE to Electric drive for the second car?

At the moment I have a ridiculous second car, an AMG C63 Estate, bought last year after Lockdown 1 in the naive expectation that I'd be returning to a normal work pattern. Lockdown 2, in November and Lockdown 3, from 26th December until 17 May put paid to that as I work only from home. The result is that since July last year I've driven it 2000 miles and the longest trip was in early December to collect my daughter from London Airport.

It is both fabulous and irritating, depending on the journey. As a "shopping trolly" and "Horse bedding Transporter" it is frustrating, but on a longer run, especially on reasonably surfaced trip it is super. We also have an AMG C43 Coupe, so it is hard to justify both.
The Morgan is a "fun car" so its place in the barn is safe. Caroline refuses to even discuss getting rid of the C43, so it is all about the C63, should it stay, or should it go?

I'm a scientist, so the answer has to be based on research so I have put together a plan to test drive all the small all electric cars that, from reading reviews seem to fit my occasionally conflicting requirements, and see if any offer an acceptable blend of performance, range and pleasure to make it worth moving over to the "spark side".

Neilda of this parish is largely to blame, a ride in his Tesla 3 was a pleasant surprise.

My short list is as follows, based on reading many reviews!

Mazda MX30
Mercedes EQA 250
Vauxhall Mokka E
Vauxhall Corsa E
Volkswagen ID.3
Kia e Niro
Tesla 3
Honda E

I've already driven the Mazda, Mercedes and the two Volkswagens.
When I've completed the program I'll report further, but in the meantime if you have direct experience of any of the cars please do chime in.

Just been talking to the building inspector. He has a Nissan Leaf and took it down to Cornwall. A constant fear of not finding a charging point and delay when he found one. He said he was glad to get back to his MB c3 - what ever that is. I doubt that I will ever get an electric car unless they price me off the road or make fuel prohibitely expensive.

Peter, sorry I can't help you as my i3 is not on your shortlist, though I did see my first Honda E this week, looks a bit 'bug eyed' but the wrap around dash is amazing

I very recently swapped my Tesla Model S for a BMW iX3, fully electric, 460 km WLTP, rear wheel drive, first electric car that drives like a BMW, highly recommended!

Quite a range (of cars, not miles necessarily )... I would add the Mustang EV, maybe the Polestar 2 and Volvo XC40 EV... certainly the Skoda Enyaq (or whatever)?
If range was not needed (and clearly not if looking at the Honda E) then the MiniE maybe.
Personally I would have a hard time avoiding the larger battery e Niro given its efficiency (and fitting into the gov EV sub 35K grant territory too!) although the lower price for the i3 is also food for thought...

+1, Did a test drive with the IX3 and was surprised how well he drives. Basically the same as my X4 only when braking you feel the extra weight.
But when you use the engine brake you don't feel it anymore.
Next test is the electric Mini.
One of these two will then replace the Z4.
If there was an electric Mini in a convertible version, I would have no doubts.

The next 12 months will see dozens of new pure EV cars coming out. You also don't mention PHEV models.
If most of the journeys are short a PHEV gives you that benefit with the potential advantage of a IL6T/V8 on longer runs.

I look at the Tesla 3 as well and also feel that the time is soon but I want to see more interesting choice first.

Tesla Model 3 for me. However, upon retiring later this year I’m going to have to hand it back to my firm. When it comes to needing a replacement runabout (especially when our A3 gives up the ghost) I intend to take a look at Tesla’s proposed smaller car that I hear is due out in a year or two. If it has similar performance to the 3 as well as range but at a cheaper price due to being smaller I probably wouldn’t hesitate

Break even points for EV vs petrol shown in the tables on page 5 are a reminder that EV are not as green as many would have you believe.
