Gone with the wynns, a young and very watchable couple from Texas, they sold up and travelled the world. They started with a motor home but I haven’t watched that, it’s the sailing which has captured my attention. They were complete novices and learned on the way, pleasant, easy going videos which you don’t need to watch in order. Here’s one for no particular reason, there are many more from them. https://youtu.be/SG4PAxKnI4E

Have watched a few of these randomly over the last few months too .... as you say, not experts but they just get on with it ..... If I had my time again I'd buy a steel hulled double ender and spend a decade or two tramping the seas while I was young and single .... unfortunately Mrs Image is no sailor (although she will gamely persevere, she doesn't do boats well and I know she's not comfortable) .... hence it was never a retirement project.

Every time I see these often youngish people who cycle around the world without stopping for four years or row across the Atlantic in a canoe for three months or whatever - I can't help thinking - shouldn't they be at work?

Interesting but upsetting - I have just today sold my boat subject to survey. The intention is to give up sailing with age as the key reason.but I am half hoping that she fails the survey and I have an excuse to keep her a bit longer. We got a bit further with the sail away dream and spent a couple of years and 20 summers doing just that. But its a funny life style in which booze plays far to big a part for many people and for me it became a bit boring. There are other toys to play with. Cruising success depends on your interests as much as anything else and ours werent compatible - my wife likes to see new places. For her the boat was simply a slow way of getting there. For me, the time at sea was what its was all about and I had no interest in the ports we stopped in. The film shown is not typical of the genre. If you like watching these sell up and sail away videos - there are a lot on you tube - they almost always feature a pretty and scimpily clad young woman. Or maybe thats just the bit I notice! The interesting bit is the way that these internet savvy youngsters can finance their dream on you tube advertising fees and sponsorship. As does that **** who produces "seen through glass" and Harrys Garage for that matter.

I must have watched dozens or their videos now, enough to know that to sell up and spend your years sailing the world is harder work than just going to real work and paying for a holiday as and when you fancy. You never really escape the tedium of bureaucracy anyway, the insurance, visas and logistics are a constant drag, as is maintaining any degree of civility and comfort.
It’s good to see the world from another’s perspective, but I wouldn’t swop places for more than a fortnight.
Sorry to learn you may be ready to hang up your sou’wester, Howard, but even if your yacht sells and sails, there are plenty of other ways to enjoy the sea.

While on about youtube, here’s a nice, sophisticated song which anybody my age or older would have heard, but likely can’t remember. It doesn’t get much airtime and deserves more recognition than it receives. Composed by Kiki Dee in 1973, made the charts in 1976 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ub_fruEg4Sw

Nice track that stands the test of time, strange how her career never got going despite the massive support she got from Elton John.

I thought it an appropriate link for a yachty thread, she’s all about untangling herself, quite important when sailing.
