Just a thought...
since the ECU constantly 'learns' how to behave from all sorts of reasons, could it actually have been trying to cope with the faulty sensor and then, surprised and confused by 'new' values just can't handle the situation untill given time to adjust. If that's the case a reset could help. Disconnect the battery and leave the car for an hour or two. Could possibly help.

I had similar issues on my Zetec 1.8 Silvertop. A new coil pack and new leads from Burton Power solved the problem.

Many thanks for all the comments and suggestions, much appreciated.
I decided to adopt a methodical approach and check / replace things in order, starting with the plugs. Existing plugs were 2 years old, but were replaced and the problem has disappeared, since when I've covered over 1000 miles without a hitch. Happy days!
