Evening all, my gear knob has got a bit loose and I can't figure out how to tighten it. Does the bottom section of the knob unscrew from the top to reveal a grub screw? If so any tips on how to separate the two pieces?

While on the subject of knobs has anyone replaced the standard MX5 number with something more fitting the 3 Wheeler?

Yes, the bottom collar should screw up to the underside of the know. Grab a rubber kitchen glove to give yourself some grip.

Mine unscrewed on its own driving down the road. Which I read is somewhat par for the course with the M3W.

To elaborate on Andrew's reply:

The lower part of the gear knob unscrews to reveal 3 grub screws. So unscrew the lower part, tighten the grub screws with an allen key and retighten the lower knob collar.

Many thanks both of you. I didn't want to try and force it if the two parts weren't meant to come apart. I'll try harder tomorrow with some marigolds.

Failing that, mine was so tight that I wrapped a bit of scrap rubber (piece of old inner tube) round the collar and very carefully applied a mole wrench. It’s a bit tricky as you are not quite gripping a parallel surface. Hold on tightly to the knob part whilst unscrewing the collar. As soon as you get it to move, it unscrews easily the rest of the way by hand.

Also don't be surprised if the handbrake knob disappears into the footwell. I have had both knobs come off more than once.

They’re absolute rubbish, attached using grub-screws tightened onto tape around the threaded portion of the mx5 gearstick. Whoever thought that was a good idea!?

I took mine off, removed the tape then bought a gear knob specifically for the MX5 fit. Screwed it on tight and hey- ho here we go!

The top part of the knob screws off too - this helps you to see the grub screws. When you screw it back on line up the top half and screw the bottom half up to lock it in the right orientation.

Thanks again all. Mark H may I ask what kind of knob you replaced it with? A simple steel or aluminium ball would look better in my opinion if I could find one that fits.

I'm wondering if something like this would be a native fit.
