My door hinges now have play and upon close examination there is movement between the door hinge and the chassis. The counter sunk Allen key bolts appear to be stiff and I want to get to the back of the “A” frame to put some release oil on and remove th potentially fit nuts to help keep the door hinge tight. Obviously if there is still significant play I’ll have yo fit over size hinge pins. I am however struggling to remove the carpet to get to into the area! The carpet wraps around the frame and seems very solidly fixed! Any advise on how to move the carpet?

The carpet is glued Roger. A hair dryer might soften the adhesive.

On the later cars some of the hinge allen bolts have non captive nuts behind, so don't expect consistency.

Also if you drift the pins out be wary that the head can touch the paint and may chip some off, so mask above the hinge if you try this.

Hi RogerQ - If the hinge pins were worn, then you would see the sections of the hinge moving when trying to lift the door at the door handle end and not where the hinge plate attaches to the A frame. But, as you describe ‘movement between the door hinge and the chassis”(?🤷🏼‍♂️), it is likely that you are correct about the hinge fixings needing tightened.

The carpet around the A-frame just inside the footwell is glued on........when I had to tighten these nuts, it needed a good pull and the use of a flat metal lever to separate the carpet from the frame. But, as that’s the only way in, it’s a good idea to have a can of strong carpet adhesive spray on hand when you’ve done the nuts. There are plenty available on the usual online stores.

I’m not a carpet fitter, but, as long as you generously coat both surfaces that are to be stuck together and then WAIT a few minutes for the glue to get really tacky before pressing them together, the carpet piece should go back OK.

Dave and Arthur.

Thanks for your advise regarding this. I’ll get the hair dryer out and see if I can persuade the carpet to loosen its grip! I’ll get some spray on carpet glue too,

I did manage to get my finger into the A frame plate on the passenger side and on that side there doesn’t appear to be any nuts.

I’ve also ordered a 5/32 socket Allen key so that I can get good purchase on the bolts!

Looks like it’s going to be a mid-week job!

I had a similar problem with mine, the hex head bold seemed solid but there was play between the hinge plate and the frame of both the door and body. I found there were unlock nuts behind each bold and got at least a turn on every one. Tightened everything up very nicely .
