I have a friend who works in the 'super yacht' industry. It is a different world to the one occupied by mere millionaires - quite extraordinary.

But not for a good while yet. Far too soon. We will also be very careful about ship choice too. Those huge ships are a no-go even without Covid. Too many people clamouring for the facilities. Bars full, lounges full, queues everywhere. Avoid the “ family orientated” ships. The kids running amok is a real nuisance. Mind you I’d put up with it to take the grandchildren on a cruise.Having been on several cruises we have learned a lot about what to look for. A bit like taking a holiday in the UK. Bournemouth with it’s golden sands, if you can find a space. There are so many better places to go here in the UK.
We haven’t flown for a holiday for some time. The cattle herding at airports with hanging about is a big reason to avoid. When cruises are picked then apart from a couple they are Southampton out and return, hotel the night before with a cruise park deal, taxi to and from the ship, well organised check in with time slots. The cruise operators are so much better at these things.
The problems will arise due to early restarting of cruises before Covid is properly managed. The vaccination take up needs to be high and preventing un vaccinated passengers a key. It is the rule breakers, chancers, stupid numpties that will be the problem as we see everywhere now.
We will simply keep an eye on things in 2022 for a possible next cruise. The risks are too high at the moment.

Interesting comment for a colleague today, lifelong German premium brand driver. He live in Dublin where you poor chaps get humped for import and duty taxes. He runs a company and so has bought an electric cars as I understand you also have some good tax incentives currently.

He looked at the Merc EQC, Audi ETron SUV, Tesla 3 and X. In the end he could not get on with the finish and design of the Tesla and purchased the Audi. He is very happy with it but has experienced several issue around the charging infrastructure. Dublin to Belfast apparently has little to offer and they are often busy/queued. His experience and comments were all around the annoyance of charging away from home. Likes the car and has enjoyed the silence of Electric.

There seems to be a lot of well publicised pushing to promote EV’s but a lack of the accompanying infrastructure to provide power. The car manufacturers have been steered to reducing ICE volume with politically projected target dates. The promotion and advertising for the cars is increasing. Any infrastructure changes seem to be pretty invisible. Generation, distribution, taxation details take a bit of digging for. It’s almost as if it is a case of muddling along. Hydrogen as a power source is there in the background but also takes searching for.

I get the feeling that not only the well advertised ICE ban but more subtly the Euro7 emmissions coming in shortly will be very painful for those of us who like the sound of a V8 etc.

The requirements for a petrol engine to meet Euro 7 seem very restrictive with the doom mongers saying that most of the current engines will be choked to death and have trouble pulling the skin off a custard. The additional cost over a current petrol engine will be considerable as well as the space in the engine bay. This will further damage the range of non-BEV city cars quite quickly as their prices will rise and volumes will fall sending the manufacturers running. I think the introduction of the new FIAT 500 model as BEV only alongside the existing one is the first of several. The only way to keep the price sensible in this case is to short the battery capacity as we are seeing.

My (always) cynical side also expects that as BEV becomes the rising tide the excuse will be found to increase the tax on evil nasty fossil fuels as an "incentive" for those dirty drivers to switch. Yes, switch party or even country perhaps.....

You probably answered your own question. Many possibly the majority of car buyers are not interested in the car as such wanting a transport appliance to make them look good. They are impressed with techy gadgets many of which will be hardly used. Many buy ridiculously expensive mobile phones "because its faster" that really only do what the old one did. If they deleted apps they only used once the old phone would be quicker. Do you need 48Mpixels for a photo you will only view on a small screen?
Manufacturers of ICE & EVs know buyers are impressed by tech so load more & more of it on cars & charge for the "added value". The fact that your touch screen loaded car is more difficult to operate than the old one with knobs & buttons is not considered but many buyers. TMers are not "normal car buyers", we know that most of this tech is of no real value. Car dealers know it too & all the extras you paid handsomely for add little to the value when trading it in.
