I am hearing a deep rubbing or grinding noice when braking while turning left. Seems to be coming from front. Not seeing anything loose. Might this be from loose front wheel hub nut? theories?

OKAY: Tightened wheel hub nuts. So it's not that most likely. they were tight as can be. any theories? past experience of typical symptoms what this can be? brake shoe related?

The front/rear thing could be misperception. I've had a grinding/rubbing noise from the rear belt during left hand turns. The geometry changes and if the belt is too close it may rub against the tire. Have not had that happen since I've made sure that the belt is as far as I can get from the tire even if it's overhanging the sprocket by a bit.
What's your mileage? Who cares. Is it practical? See #1. What happens when it rains? You get wet.

Michael, I will check that that out stat. I had the back open a couple weeks ago and everything looked sorted. I wonder --related to your point about it being from the back (a passenger in the car said he thought it was from the back end)--maybe the back bearings? what are symptoms of that going (shy of locking up entirely)

Check where the roll hoops pass through the body. I've seen one car where there has been an intermittent metal on metal rubbing noise from this region. The solution was to grind away the bodywork to provide clearance and we also fitted new rubber grommets.

I had a not disimilar noise in my 2005 Roadster and it turned out that the differential oil needed changing.

Likely not the same as your issue, but the only grinding/rubbing noise I had was upon deceleration around 10 mph. It was from a too-tight drive belt.

Check the rear tyre pressure, if slightly down it could be the tyre flexing onto the drivebelt.
If it is only when you have virtually full left lock check the lower rear of the left front mudguard (fender). It could be the front mudguard has moved slightly and is rubbing the tyre.
