We've spotted a pair of these at the bird table on a couple of occasions. The Merlin bird app tells me that it could be a Eurasian Jay. Not fully convinced but can any twitchers out there confirm? They're not a great photos, I took them from well within the kitchen, as soon as you move they're off unfortunately. Looks like a Jay to me ,should have blue feathers on lower part of the wing .

Jay. We get them at the back of work, lots of acorns which they seem to consume more of than the squirrels.

Yep ... a Jay .... we're right on the edge of their range here at the top end of Aberdeenshire so they're a rare sighting .... I've only ever seen one locally ... but just down the road in Deeside they're much more often seen. Part of it is their fondness for deciduous woodland which is scarcer up here.
When we were kids they were plentiful on our walks in Epping Forest .... the fabulous blues in the wing flash feathers made those the prize jewels of our childhood feather collections and we'd hunt hard for shed ones. 🙂

Yes a Jay, we get them down here.
When we lived in Northern Germany the rough shooters used to shoot them as part of the bag for the table in the late 1970's.

Thanks all, I thought we were maybe too far north for it to be a jay. They are lovely looking birds but there wouldn't be much eating in them!!!!!!

Being members of the crow family they are considered a pest and are often shot ,the blue feathers are used in fly tying the famous trout fly being the Invicta .

They can only be shot specifically to protect other wild bird species .... the old general licences don't apply and the current one has that limitation .... certainly up North here they're not numerous enough to pose a risk to other bird populations so a shooter would be hard pressed to justify shooting one .... the picture may be different down South where they're more numerous.
