What is the current thinking on claims against Merc and others, re the cheat device? Plenty of ambulance chasing lawyers out there, but I’m wary of signing up for obvious reasons

I had a VW which was affected, they rectified it at one of the services, I never noticed any difference before or after and when I sold the car, it was a non-issue, nobody cared.

In my opinion, the compensation nonsense is a far bigger racket that the infringement ever was.

They shouldn't compensate car owners, they should compensate people who've been medically effected imho.

Got to agree but that's the modern and grasping way of looking at every problem,

As a Merc diesel owner I was contacted by one of the ambulance chaser companies, they wanted claimants to make a statement that they wouldn’t have bought the car if they’d known at the time. That’s simply not true in my case nor for most I suspect. Some will no doubt look upon it as an opportunity to get something for nothing. The problem is that these claims must work else these companies wouldn’t spend so much trying to get claimants, think how many “miss sold PPI?” calls you had. At the time of the VW “scandal” I was convinced that there’d be more to follow but I didn’t think it would take so long.

I think some of the these companies that try and drive up the claims industry should be forced to pay if they raise hopes and then fail so that it makes them truthfully qualify the case prior to generating trouble. If there is a case then I do not think it is unreasonable for someone to answer it. It just needs to have a true weight of justification applied prior to being thrown out there like grains of sand.

Some years ago I bought an Audi Q3 diesel. Before the scandal. On selling it on 3 years later (just after the scandal) the salesperson reckoned the scandal had dropped the price by about 3grand. I know I was unlucky with the timing, but did feel I had lost something. Signed up no win no fee litigation. Well still waiting for it to come to court. It is taking years & I wish I had not bothered.

Generally people in NZ opted to leave their VW diesels as they were concerned about a loss of power and there is no test here.
