I've entered my 2013 4/4 in The Motorcycling Club's John Aley Trial on the 26th June. This the first trial I've ever done on four wheels. Previous trials on bikes have been simple - just turn up & ride.

Reading the regs carefully (& admittedly late in the day) I see there are all sorts of requirements by the supervising bodies of motor sport so I would appreciate any words of wisdom from people who have participated in the past.

we're entered for the R (classic road) class and there are 3 things I can see I need: fire extinguisher(s), spill kit and decent towing eye. Is there anything I've missed?

I have a couple of questions I'd like help with:
  • are AFFF (foam) extinguishers required - I've ordered 2 one-litre bottles
  • is it OK for fire extinguishers to be loose on the floor or rear shelf
  • does the factory fitted towing eye meet the required standard

If needed I plan to bolt the mount for one fire extinguisher to the lid of the tool tray and bolt the other to a board in the passenger footwell - that way they can't bounce around and there's one up front & one behind

Any advice would be welcome.

I bought Matilda 2 years ago and had to wait 18 months to get a chance to enter any trial!

Depends what permit it is being run under.

If its Motorsport UK then I think the minimum requirement is for a 2.4l handheld AFFF extinguisher as dry powder was outlawed in 2018.

I always used to carry two....for the simple reason if you discharged one by accident or helping a fellow competitor, you were still compliant.

Fire extinguishers should never be loose to prevent damage to them or to the crew, they are a heavy pressurised cylinder at the end of the day.

Hmm the towing eye is a tough one. My gut feeling is probably not, its only for towing on level surfaces I guess - not a snatch tow of a car firmly embedded in the undergrowth!

Just back from a hillclimb this weekend where towing eyes were the focus of the scruitineers. I suspect it is because marshals are not supposed to touch the car if it can be avoided, due to COVID. The front towing eye which is standard on recent Morgans will be ok but I would look at fitting one to the rear before the event.
