My windscreens had been bolted to the bulkhead mounts with the domed bolts plastered with ptfe tape and filler....until today! It was an easy job to remove the brackets, drill, tap and insert helicoils, then clean up the domed bolts, and refit....pleased with the job...

Yes, If only I'd known about helical inserts back when I was a penniless kid trying to keep my Tigercub on the road, I wouldn't have been guilty of some truly appalling bodges. VCJ 190 is now no longer on the DVLA database, so the poor thing probably didn't survive the ministrations of a succession of owners.

Used them in workshops from back in the day when I was on the shop floor (that was a long time ago!). Marvellous solution that solved many expensive problems, stripped drain plugs in Mini/Maxi gearbox cases that the cost of change would have written off the cars were resolved with a Helicoils.
When the windscreen was changed on my 4/4 Sport the dealer found a stripped thread much as yours Richard but they either didn’t have or didn’t know or??? of Helicoils and the costs of the replacement casting was eye watering, well over £150 for the cost of a 50p Helicoil insert!!!

My summer job in 1976 and 1977 was at BIP (British Industrial Plastics) at Streetly where they made plastic moulding machines. Working in the stock control and buying office, I got to know a lot of the standard inventory. They used helicoils in various sizes on a regular basis. I never found out if they were for repairs or to strengthen threads in alloy castings.

Repairs in alloy I would guess / hope. They are a great invention.

I replaced a thread in the windscreen bracket of mine too .... those bolts seem to attract gorillas ..... the casting is brass (to my surprise) ... so the helicoil will be a decent durability upgrade!.

I insert helicoils in newly machined alloy/magnesium castings as a matter of course. Spent most of today machining up an Elektron backplate for my pre war racing motorcycle. I used 1/2 x 20 tpi helicoil for the brake anchor bolt holes. I also helicoiled a 205 GTI cylinder head in situ after ham-fisted rally mechanic had stripped the spark plug thread. I've the complete range apart from 1/4 UNC....which I lent to a well known Morganist from Unstone would you believe? Arwyn

I have used many helicoils over the years to repair stripped threads in cast steel. I was told by an aircraft engineer that Time-Sert was a better system, though I have never used them... Any thoughts/experience..?
