My engine is currently in bits at Brands Hatch Morgan & I am facing a bill of £5,000 for parts alone to rebuild it. If they can be found.

The problem has been caused by oil starvation due to the oil cap seal decomposing & falling off.

Anyone got a spare engine ?

Sorry to hear that Richard, I always thought a coarse wire mesh dome over the outlet would be a good idea similar to a sump pickup strainer.

Hello Richard,

Sorry to hear your news - I was fearful that I was going to face the same. My M3W made a heavy metallic grinding sound whilst travelling at 55mph - instant loss of power.
Got recovered home - eventually & subsequently arranged collection by MMC - for investigation.
M3W was in Malvern last week - picked it fixed on Friday afternoon.
I managed to get away with just a snapped valve - £2000 all in.

During the week Morgan confirmed that they had purchased loads of additional spare parts from S&S - also they had a good stock of spare engines (just in case).
MMC is now shutdown this week - I am sure BHM will find all the necessary spares, on their return.

Fingers crossed for you.

Andrew

All oil tank cap seals should have a large retaining washer in place, bolted through the cap, as in the photo. The seal falling into the tank and blocking the oil pick up port happened on a few occasions several years ago and most cars were modified to prevent it, sadly not yours though Richard. Thanks for bringing it to everyones attention again, you may have saved a few others a similar fate.

I don't know the history of your car but there have been some M3W's sold recently that have spent many years sat in garages and not been used or updated over the last 6 or more years. There have been lots of mods and improvements over that time and buying one of these cars could involve a lot of work to have a reliable car.

These disasters do happen - a few years back a missing bolt turned up in the V6 Roadster engine smashing two cylinders necessitating a complete re-build.

Of course no one told me there was a two inch bolt missing from the air filter cover!

£9K and 22 weeks later with no insurance interest as it was an avoidable incident - I was back on the road.

Good Luck to Richard.

Cheers

I had to have a new engine when the sump plug departed company doing 95mph, saw the blue smoke and immediately stopped but too late terminal damage done. It only takes a few seconds for the S&S engine to cook when running hot in my case it was cheaper to buy a new engine than rebuild the old (my insurance company Hagerty covered the cost)
