I'm struggling with the concept of the spinner version. If you're going to use a socket, what's the point of having ear-spinners in the first place?

I like the two eared too. Also you have a choice of removal method; at home use the tool, on the road in an emergency whack it with a mallet!
I currently have octagonal. The LH spinner set seem to be a slightly imperfect octagon whereas the RH are fine! Morgan supplied pressed steel spanner does not fit the LH very securely. I have Lionel’s excellent octagon tool which he had to come round to my house with so we could test the clearance so it would work on both sets of the dodgy spinners. Already had one of his tools for our three eared Lotus Elan Sprint wheels.

I agree, the two eared spinners do look nice and I did consider them myself once. Judging by the number of second-hand sets of hexagon nuts I've seen at autojumbles (often packaged nicely in a two-eared spinner box) it is a popular swap. I've grown to love my hexagons though! I've made contact with Lionel and he is to make me a tool once I've given him the precise dimensions of the wheel nuts. As HJF says, apparently there is a lot of inconsistency.

on the road in an emergency whack it with a mallet! Reminds me of the time when our lovely scorer Samantha went on a Sunday afternoon drive with one of the elderly BBC archivists. They had a puncture and needed to remove the wheel so she helped him whack it off in a lay-by.

I measured mine across the flats with my digital callipers. The LHS were slightly smaller than the RHS. But, the tool fitted the RHS okay but not the LHS! Turned out the octagon on the LHS was not “perfect” so Lionel swapped the tool for the next toleranced size up. 2018 car.

Not a fan of ISIHAC, Owen? After a random question at my all-female - and young - hair dresser staff, it turns out that not one of them had heard of The Archers or Desert Island Discs. I am sure if I had described the game Mornington Crescent they would have thought me insane! Sad Times
