Hello all there are some here who have rebuilt both Standard Special, TR and Matchless engines....... Here are few pics of the 'seal' on the crank on the standard special....wooden wedges are used believe it or not.....see below 2015-03-22 15.42.24 by Robert & Ali Davies, on Flickr 2015-03-22 15.42.39 by Robert & Ali Davies, on Flickr 2014-10-20 16.40.31 by Robert & Ali Davies, on Flickr 25765382963_2e5b534ce7_o by Robert & Ali Davies, on Flickr

This was forwarded to me by John Merton (mentioned by Tim above :
There are similarities, but also differences, to the TR engines.
The rear main bearing has an alloy cover over the cap and it does have small slots on either side for the insertion of a fabric seal soaked in goo as per the TR advice. Re oil sealing the crank there’s a helical scroll thread machined on the end of the shaft as was fairly common practice at the time. There is an alloy cover surrounding this which has a matching scroll where it fits over the crankshaft. This cover bolts to the back of the block. The effect of this system is to drive any escaping oil back into the sump. However, the effectiveness of this design relies on very tight tolerances. In fitting the alloy cover it’s critical to ensure an even clearance between the two scroll surfaces. If they touch anywhere the scroll may grind off the alloy compromising effectiveness. I’ve found the clearance to be around 2 thou.
Also try not to park the car facing uphill, particularly with a fullish sump!
