Yes, very helpful!

So the clutch disc is significantly smaller than the Miata's, though presumably the flywheel/ring gear O.D. is the same.

Did your clutch fail on its own (which would be concerning), or was it helped along by a failing compensator?

Might you be able weigh your clutch parts? That would let me get a better estimate of the inertia,.

Thanks very much, also to @planenut and @Bitsobrits

Speaking of the flywheel/ring gear, does anyone know if there's one of the same diameter used with T-5 application?

Here is pic of notes i took of weights.

Diaphragm just decided to crack, all by itself.
Had to buy complete new clutch as couldnt source a diaphragm any where

Looks like clutch unit was approx 3kg

Thanks!

That's pretty light all told, and thinning the outer part of the flywheel greatly reduces the inertia, which increases as the 4th power of the diameter.

Is M3W clutch failure not that unusual, or did you just have bad luck?

I can't think of anything the driver could do to cause that, other than regularly using it for high rep leg exercises.

Hi
I am not a high rep leg exercise type of guy, probably closer to couch potato. Lol

Clutch diaphragm plate just cracked of its own volition, I think there was another incidence reported but in general the clutch setup has been more reliable than most of the rest of the car

You seem to be having a hard time with reliability lately P964 ☹️. Probably too late for you now but www.clutch-specialists.co.uk are good for the TTV Racing clutch repairs and parts. TTV will not supply or help with anything.

The main problem with the M3W clutch seems to be the plate springs breaking then coming loose and jamming in the release mechanism. I am sure Phil Bleazey could tell you more as he has replaced quite a few when doing the Centa mods.

From memory, the flywheel is a lightweight bespoke steel affair with a Mazda ring gear fitted. It is all steel no cast iron.

So is clutch-specialists only a reseller? So they couldn't make me a flywheel with a different ring gear that would fit hey Bill housing that fits a T5 transmission?

How about https://clutch-specialists.co.uk ?

I guess I can't edit; anyway "hey Bill' was the radio talking, and I didn't realize CG Motorsport had the same URL.

I have confirmed that the stub shaft on the M3W has the same bolt pattern and hub diameter to allow a Miata flywheel to bolt up to it. I have an old Harley comp and used that stub shaft to compare to drawings of the Miata flywheel.

The only unknown is the stack height of the Miata versus the custom M3W system. Not sure if the Volvo hydraulic throw out bearing is an exact replacement dimension wise as the Miata fork and separate bearing system as in the old school days. I understand that "some" of the very early M3W's used the slave cylinder and external fork/bearing system, is that true?

Since the Centa stub shaft is an extension and represents the Miata crank hub, one could guess the Miata would work. I've found Miata racing flywheels in the 8# to 9# range, which would put it close the custom M3W flywheel weight. The Miata uses a larger diameter clutch disc and there are tons of Stage 1 and Stage 2 setups that still have a standard looking disc with the center spring pack. Unfortunately I cannot confirm any of this yet physically, but working on it as we type... smile
