Ran to the local cycle shop today to get my inspection done for registration and title (don't tell the gov that I've been driving for months without paying their ransom).

Mentioned to them that I need to do my first oil change as I've already gone past the 500m mark. They recommended a fancy filter they sell that's alleged to be higher filtration and also higher flow than the S&S OEM filter. They've installed it on many S&S X-wedge motors over the years and have had nothing but great success with them. The shop has been in business for many years and came highly recommended by several riders. I can't imagine they'd have lasted with bad advice/service.

So I sprung for this and a case of Amsoil synthetic.

The oil change went without issue (except me buggering up the oil pressure wire and having to rebuild it). Pulled the sump plug as well and the magnet had a fair amount of fine metal particles. Motor seems to run smoother already after a short drive around the neighborhood. Will keep everyone posted on the filter.

I had one of those on a motorcycle I used to own. Came with the bike, went with the bike when sold. A bit of a pain to clean.

You should know that they are not rated the same as the S&S recommended filter. K&P's website, under FAQs, talks about their micron rating, which is 35 microns. The S&S recommended filter is 10 micron rated. The K&P website gets a bit disingenuous when talking about OEM filter ratings, noting that the OEM rating is average and insinuating the OEM filter could be passing much larger particles. But it is hard to average 10 if you are passing 50 micron particles also. Also I don't believe the K&P unit has an anti drainback valve as part of that design, which is part of the S&S recommended design. Not sure how important that is to the X-wedge.

From the X-Wedge owners manual: "The S&S® X-Wedge® engine requires a spin-on filter with an anti-drain back valve, rated at 10 microns."

At the end of the day it probably won't make that much difference on these machines that only do limited mileage per year/oil change, but I wouldn't recommend the K&P filter over the S&S filter.

I would sick with the S&S filter.

I would have thought anti drain back quite important on a dry sump engine which already has a reputation for wet sumping if not used regularly.

S--t at that price I would expect the filter to be panning for gold

Go online to S&S and buy a bunch of the proper filters and you will save on shipping one at a time. Britmog is correct, Panning for Gold seems to be their mantra.

If you really want to get an inspectable element filter with anti-drainback and a good micron rating (8) you might want to check out the Canton Racing spin on type filter with replaceable elements. I see they now offer a 3.4" size which is virtually the same size as the S&S filters.

I've used the 4 1/4" housing version (same replaceable element) on several other cars for many years now (over 30 years on the Lotus!). Financially these really don't make sense as you still have to buy the replaceable elements ($11.99@PegasusAutoRacing.com) so there is no payback. What you do get is the ability to visually inspect the filter media and interior of the filter assembly at each oil change, which is why I use them.

Just checked, and I can't verify if these have anti-drainback valves or not. The 4 1/4" definitely do. I have an email into Canton to check on this.

The anti-drainback valve in the filter is not an absolute seal, it also is only designed to hold some oil in the filter for startup. Wet sump is caused by the drain-back valve failing in the oil pump. Totally different issue.

As for the filtration, I'm a big oil analysis believer. We'll see what the results are of this batch of synthetic running through it.

I did initially try to order the S&S filters, but they're out. Even so, those are most likely manufactured by another company and S&S just prints their logo on it. I was shocked at how easily the metal deformed and punctured on the stock filter. What if hard road debris hits it? Yikes.

I am using HD oil filter

K&N have suitable filters (as shown in the Alternative Parts List):

These are proven to work well on the M3W and have the benefit of a hex moulding on the end so you can use a spanner to easily undo them.
