Well, the pump is off with no dramas, the bolts weren't very tight. The inner bearing is completely shot, I checked my records and it was replaced in 2013, 8,000 miles ago! I guess that's where lack of use can be a bad thing? There are new-old-stock pumps on eBay listed for TVR & SD1 V8 but these have a threaded portion on the nose flange. I'll try and post a photo!

When you get the replacement, note that the vertical take off pipe can stick almost straight up, or be angled back. It's not critical, but just worth knowing.
My original pump when I replaced it during the rebuild, was working fine. The replacement had that pipe at a different angle, and whereas on the old one, the impellor was large and a tight fit in the housing, the replacement had a smaller impellor which had a much bigger clearance. It still worked OK though. I kept that original pump for years intending to have it reconditioned, but unless its still in the loft, I must have thrown it out. That was 1990.

Thanks Dave. I can only conclude the belt has been too tight. I'm paranoid about my Elan Twincam because that's an engine out job, never thought twice about the Morgan!

I think the threaded portion on the nose flange is for the viscous coupling fan where fitted e.g Rangerovers etc

New pump fitted, no drama except the nose of the pump is too close to the cross member to pass the belt so I had to drop the pump again. I'd only got a couple of bolts in so no drama just not ideal to separate the freshly Hylomar'd gasket! I had a new belt to hand so it shouldn't need replacing for a while. I now have a persistent leak from the bottom hose connection to the pump so I'll have to give in and make up a new silicone hose. Any recommendations? I really wish I could remove the alternator to give me some working space but the front 'hinge' bolt has been fitted with the head to the front so can't be removed because it fouls the body. The engine must have been dropped in with the alternator fitted 😬 The only way I can see to remove it is to remove the alloy carrier on the front of the engine.

PS: I found a supplier of old Rover parts who has some suitable new shortened pumps. He didn't know what they were for, supplied for P6's but lack the threaded shaft for the viscous fan so sitting in his stock. PM me if you want the contact.
