Guy Martin on Ch4 - worlds fastest EV..... Was it worth watching ? I enjoyed it. I think it gave a balanced view of where we are right now and what the future might hold. The choice of car for the record attempt was disappointing I thought (aerodynamically) but obviously there was a programme budget to adhere to. Guy Martin on Ch4 - worlds fastest EV..... Was it worth watching ? Yeah, it was fairly entertaining. His ending comments were that the UK infrastructure wasn't there yet and EV ownership was only practical If you wanted to travel 50 miles or so, and not do long distances. However he thought we would probably be there in a couple of years. He already had and used his own EV car, although his Mrs hated it due to 'range anxiety'. He didn't beat the record....... Thanks men for the feedback, it sounds quite interesting and I'll get it on catch up

Just watched it. The narrator needs his vocal chords removed. The VW was fun but the trip to JOG really showed up some things I didn't know. I had no idea the fueling could be charged at any price the supplier liked. It made me realise that the charging will be taxed etc. Very easily. So he paid more than the price of diesel. Then there was how long it took. It made me realise that planning my route via charging points would drive me mad. How can it be efficient to have to drive away from your route to charge the car. Adding an hour to a journey would be seriously annoying for me. I like to drive straight to my destination. Long detours with the possibility of a non functioning charger at the end of the detour would stress me something rotten. So I'm back to my initial thoughts.. I'd use one to commute if I commuted say, 50 miles a day. But for me it's a no go until the services are in place. Nick

Touring the Highlands needs planning even with fossil fuels...and that's stressful enough at times with road closures and long diversions.

[EV ownership was only practical If you wanted to travel 50 miles or so, and not do long distances.
Which, of course, is nonsense. I do a 160 mile commute in mine easily with a lot to spare from an 80% charge. In fact the range in my Tesla is more than my +8. There is an awful lot of rubbish written about EV's.

Yes, cos we can all afford a Tesla...... I think Guy Martin's research was based more on the 'average' EV user, rather than the wealthy.. There is an awful lot of rubbish written about EV's. Absolutely, The Hyundai Ioniq he was testing had a range of less than 170 miles if used on the motorway. If you don't believe me, watch the programme.

Interesting write up on the Tesla 3 https://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/a30209598/2019-tesla-model-3-reliability-maintenance/It does seem as if using heaters, aircon and going fast uses up significant range. But I wouldn't mind any of that if it was a second car, or at least if I had another car for longer journeys. For instance, one of my clients is a pilot and has a Tesla to go up and down to Heathrow. He loves it. It certainly looks lovely. His mileage figure varies enormously ( he says) between winter and summer but there's plenty in reserve for his commute even at worst. Nick

The tredder he road is illegal to use on UK roads, I notice nobody comments on that! is that because a lot of you don't know what you are talking about? if you knew about ionity chargers you'd know that if you have certain German brands then the cost is 29p/kWh not 70 and in some cases free for so many thousands of kWh, but I guess it was worthwhile taking a car that couldn't make use of the 350 kW charging rate so that they could make a point to get the knee jerk reaction.
Something's need a little perspective

Some interesting comments from both sides of the debate, clearly availability of charging facilities may or may not feature as a concern in your use of an EV, which may be down to your route and location. I wouldn't be surprised if the urban areas are currently better serviced than remote rural areas, very much reflecting availability of petrol filling stations. Low demand, remote sparse population equals limited number of stations compared with high density commuter belt areas.
The economics of the EV's will change dramatically in the coming years as the Exchequer has to raise the taxes currently generated by ICE .Add into the mix the new infrastructure costs of providing for EV's and the costs of removal of defunct petrol stations, refineries etc. The lack of maintenance needed for EV's and the potential demise of a whole service industry and the resultant jobs dependant upon ICE...we have yet to grasp the full social and economic cost that may be have to be borne by the EV.
Could be akin to the days when the ICE lead to the fall of the horse as the main means of transport and all the resultant jobs that disappeared eg stable hands, farriers etc. Lets hope that some form of clean petrol keeps the ICE a viable proposition with its resultant service and support industry.
The cost of a unit of electricity has risen disproportionately in recent decades and will continue to rise to fund the necessary provision of clean energy to meet growing demands, a demand and growing cost that may lead to fuel poverty in the UK as cheap carbon fuels are removed from our economic model and the potential for inflationary resultant price increases. There is more to this than just the availability of a charging unit.

Something's need a little perspective Or taking the car that the average UK punter has some hope of being able to buy, as opposed to something from Tesla or Germany that are well out of their price range. Remember, the median UK salary is £31,461 and the mean UK salary is £36,834 per year. Best selling new cars in the UK so far this year? 1. Vauxhall Corsa - £16-23K 2. Ford Fiesta - £16 - £20K. Find me a good, long range, cheap charging EV in that price bracket. As I've said before, I'm not anti EV - I'd have a Tesla at the drop of a hat. I also really like the look of that Hyundai from the programme. We just need to be a little more realistic about how much cash people have, and how they're going to charge them. I invite anyone to come to my street in the evening and explain how all the double parked cars lining the road are going to get charged. You can also come and play Morgans and drink Cider.

It's painful.
I have always argued that public and commercial transport should be cleaned up first as it's these vehicles that run for greater hours per day than private transport (commuting etc), even the mighty Tesla seem to be having problems getting their trucks to market. Other manufacturers are however targeting these market places.
Next time you are in your side screen less Morgan get a good lungfull of a truck or bus exhaust, and smile when the courier sits on you road with his transit van sat there chugging away.
Private buyers tend to be faced with a top end market with luxury models being the ones that help manufacturers transition, thankfully cheaper brands have come on line but there is no price parity with ICE cars pricing, I doubt they'll have much wiggle room unless produced in cheaper labour markets so to get parity I expect to see the price of ICE cars to raise so the manufacturer's can justify the price of EVs.
No one said it'd be easy
