A few years ago I had to put on a new exhaust silencer on my 1961 Plus 4. It came from the Canadian dealer direct from Morgan in the UK. It has always been loud, far louder than any other Plus 4 in the local Morgan club. Does anyone know where I can get a suitable silencer in the UK or USA that would be somewhat quieter? Morgan Spares in Copake, NY are close until next week. Does anyone else have a similar experience?

Any good exhaust pipe shop should be able to knock one up for you.

I had one made in stainless locally to a pattern for a quarter of the price quoted by a Morgan dealer.

Colin .... as a temporary measure have you thought of trying a supplementary baffle .... easily available and cheap as chips .... I carry one in case my racer falls foul of the noise scrutineers and I need to quieten it before competing .... I've found they have very little effect on performance even on an engine that revs to 14,000. .... might give your ears some relief while you're sorting a more permanent solution.

Re the supplementary baffle - never seen these. Does this mean cutting the end of the exhaust pipe?

Colin ... the baffle sits inside the tailpipe .... they're a few pounds and come in different sizes to suit ... they just need a hole drilled near the end of the tailpipe for the small securing bolt (which can be done with the tailpipe in place) .... they can be fitted and removed in minutes ..... might be worth a try.

Harpers used to do them. Tel +441923588829. I am not sure if they still trade though.

John .... from Canada the interwebby will yield dozens of sellers for a few quid as a try-out to see if it tames Colin's exhaust bark while he decides the best way forward. Just a thought on my part as I've used them in the past to curb my more antisocial noise-generators 🙂

I've used the baffles mentioned above on bikes and they've proved pretty successful. Some have holes on the inner pipe - I wired some exhaust silencer material round that, but it choked the bike too much.

I've also built my own exhaust from ebay stainless parts - cheap and used clamps. Also worth a try.
