Four years ago when I was at the classic (2008)many Mog drivers were talking about visiting a new museum, somewhere near Caen, on their return journey. Then I was heading further south into France but next summer I'd like to follow this trail on our direct return northwards. Question to all is, what do you recommend as the best museum worth a visit in the few hours before catching that homeward ferry? All ideas gratefully received - thanks!

I would skip the museum and go for a walk on Omaha Beach instead then stroll up the hill to the American War Cemetary, it's on the D 514 near St Laurent s-Mer

If you go back via Calais go to Vimy ridge where there is a preserved 1 st world war trench system.
That is very moving.

Pegasus Bridge is interesting, on the Caen canal near Ouisterham. Its where the gliders landed at night in 1944. The original bridge is in the museum, a larger modern version is in use now over the river, and there are lots of other exhibits to see, outside and undercover if its raining! http://www.memorial-pegasus.org/mmp/musee_debarquement/index.php?lang=uk

Yes Jay I agree. I thought leaving the shell craters in the grounds really shows how bad it must have been.
My grandfather was with the Welsh Regiment in Gallipoli where he got frostbite but then luckily he went to the middle east going from Cairo to Dmascus with Lawrence of Arabia.
We did go to another museum once on the D Day beaches but not the one in this thread & I can't remember where.

The shell craters and mine craters are quite sobering. I did the Somme battlefields, Vimy Ridge and Verdun this year and what is shocking is the size of some of the battlefields like Mametz and High Wood...so small yet so man men died.
There is an interesting D-Day museum at Arromanche which I always enjoyed visiting when in Normandy.
