My advice would be to send your very graphic photograph with a polite but firm covering letter (recorded delivery) to Mr Steve Morris at the Morgan factory. You could stress that this is a known problem due to defective design and materials and potentially very serious. At the very least they should provide you with a replacement cap of the later type. Good luck!

Thanks for the great advice guys....

My plan of action will be to follow Planenuts advice and fix the issue myself (same as always) and then also write to the factory.......again!! I did that trying to get the parts for free for my centa conversion but they never even responded....ha ha ha!!

But thanks to Bunny at least I now have a name....Thank you for that!!

Cheers/

I've always had great luck with cork gasket material. In the "old" days, 40's - 50's, cork was used on gas tank caps almost exclusively. I have cork gasket sheets in my gasket material bin and use it quite often when I need to make a gasket that thickness is not an issue.

I would try a local auto parts store and ask for cork gasket material. Usually in one foot square sheets. It will be around .080" (2mm) thick and holds its shape quite well. I would cut it to fit tightly inside the cap and then use the bolt with double nuts to hold it in place in the cap. The double nuts will allow you to snug it up and then lock the nuts together.

I'm sure there are other materials that would work, but this just jumps at me, make it cork... smile

During my M3W service support 'adventures', trying to get any admission of responsibility and some level of assistance, the below contact was one of the more senior people to respond to my inquiries.

Adrian Westwood
Group After Sales Manager
Email: Adrian.Westwood@morgan-motor.co.uk
EXT: 242
Tel: 01684 584 583

And deborah.jones@morgan-motor.co.uk was the Professional Assistant to Steve Morris

I didn't get any meaningful results BTW... but good luck on your journey!

Of course I went and re-looked at the cap on my 2016. It has no large washer or O-ring, just the big rubber gasket with a nut holding it in place. So mine is 5 years old with 7k miles, and the gasket is firm and appears to have no visible signs of wear. To those who have modified, are you simply placing a large washer over the gasket (leaving the perimeter free to seal the rim of the filler opening) and using the same nut, with some Loc-Tite type product?

Yes, although you can improve the nut locking by peening the thread or Loctite, you don't want that dropping off!

Sorry, i just could not resist. If you purchase a Morgan in the USA you better live within an easy tow truck ride from it and make sure that the dealership is one that will work for Morgans pay schedule and not charge you a lot of money to fix their problem which has now been transferred to you, the owner. Very frustrating.
I would not recommend buying a Morgan for those reasons, and now that the Three Wheeler is out of production and the engines are no longer made it will be increasingly more difficult to get things for these quirky, fun, little cars.

I suspect there are dealerships in the USA that saw this coming and have stocked up on parts but those will run out and only by the good graces of Ian and the MTWC and its Alternate Parts List will this survive.
