Mass production of thorium reactors could be an option. This company reckons their systems are cheaper than building new coal-fired power stations:

No, it isn't. But then a lot of the collection aren't.
The deteriorating condition of the Life Car meant it wasn't suitable for display any longer.

Reactors for everyday road use? Really? Somehow I don’t think so. Maybe for shipping, rail, static use. Reactors might even be targets for access to the fuel for dirty bomb use.
An EV poses different safety issues to ICE vehicles in crashes. The Li batteries can still be dangerous a couple of weeks after the crash due to slow leakage, similar to smouldering of fires. One solution used is to immerse the whole car in a water bath for 2 weeks. Tests have shown Li batteries bubbling away several days post crash. Imagine how a small reactor would need to be handled. Fire Services already have to treat EV’s differently. I will look for a video I watched that demonstrates the battery problems.

It was demonstrated well on the recent Guy Martin program when he was attempting the electric car record, it'll be on C4 catch up, if that helps.

It will get quite interesting when this happens in the middle lane of the M4 and they have to cover it in a fire blanket and leave it for two days grin2
