Does anyone have any recommendations on a replacement fuel pump for my 94 3.9 +8? I think it's time for replacement as I believe the return valve is leaking as I am loosing pressure quickly when turning engine off and I have fault code 23 showing, the regulator is providing 34 psi running pressure.
Uncle Melvyn has an out of tank pump for GBP173 which seems a bit steep, Fuelpumpsonline.co.uk have a pump they say is for +8 Efi V8 part# OTP017 for GBP48.67 which is a good deal cheaper.

Going on your number Bruce this one according to the details should fit the bill at a similar price to the one you found.
I have never had to change one yet so no first hand knowledge.

The pump should give 40 psi at the fuel rail, so you are correct in thinking yours is possibly due for replacement.

However I would do some minor investigative work before going ahead. There should be a fuel filter downstream of the pump, is this dirty or blocked in any way? That could affect the pressure. It may also be worth checking that the tank itself has not built up particles around the pick up.

Apologies if your set up is different , my +8 has the pump in tank system , with the fuel filter on the bulkhead being a later car.

Assume yours is still Hotwire 14CUX injection?

The pressure in the fuel rail measured relative to atmospheric will vary, it tracks the pressure in the plenum. According to the Rover EFI reference it should be around 2.5 bar (37 psi) above plenum. I checked my +8 a week ago and at idle the pressure is 30 psi, and at fast idle with throttle open it is 35 psi, so maybe a bit low. I am currently running on the standard regulator I don't have a reference standard for pressure so did check the fuel pressure gauge against three other gauges and they all corresponded, just hope that are not all faulty with exactly the same error.

The original external fuel pump was said to be a Lucas 4FP / Rover PRC6242, I am also on the hunt for a replacement. Ideally I would like one with a filter on the inlet to take out any large debris, Facit make some but I haven't found a high pressure version. Failing that an in line filter may be the answer, but it has to be a high flow (coarse) filter so as not to cause an undue restriction. A concern is that there is a lot of relatively cheap pumps around and its difficult to be sure of the quality. I did buy a cheap pump some years ago to carry around as a spare and get me back home, but a pump stopping on a motorway, or when pulling out of a junction, is something to be avoided.

The system on my +8 is an Outside the Tank Pump with the filter downstream of the pump. The first thing I did was to change the filter, the old filter did have some crud in it, I have not looked in the tank yet. Yes, it is a Hotwire 14 CUX.

Thanks Richard that looks as though it should do the job will probably go with an upstream filter and do away with the downstream.

The technical sheets show that with vacuum disconnected to regulator the priming pressure should be 40psi which in turn will provide around 34psi running pressure when vacuum reconnected.

I have ordered, and received a Sytec Bullet fuel filter 12mm in 12mm out BULLETA6-R which I plan to use as a pre-filter. These are supplied with a paper filter, so I ordered a Hi Flow metal filter BULLA02. Plus an OTP017 external pump. Going to need to juggle bits around to get enough space to fit the pre-filter. Speaking to a lady at fuelpumsonline she said that the paper filter should be free flowing and OK as a pre-filter, but I am a erring on the side of caution by going for the metal filter

Now for the obligatory problem, when I fitted the metal element in the filter housing it rattled when shaken, turns out the metal filter canister is approx 0.5mm shorter than the paper filter. A call through to fuelpumpsonline and I was given the number for Sytec, who sent me a thicker sealing washer which takes up the space.. Just waiting for some hose clips before I start reworking the layout.

Regarding fuel pressure, with the regulator vented to atmosphere my plus 8 was a psi, and a bit, short of 40

I have been communicating with Glencoe in the UK and they have the fuel pump and hi flow filter but do not ship to the USA. However, Terry at Glencoe very kindly put me in touch with Cath at Advance Automotive Performance Ltd and she supplied the same pump and filter, they are due to arrive today. Unfortunately fuelpumpsonline don't ship to the USA either.

That psi should work and deliver around 34 psi running pressure.
