Morning all

apologies if this is a stupid question.... I'm planning to replace my Austin Seven with a Morgan F type (Ford side-valve engine). Did these cars have synchromesh gearbox? or will I still be obliged to double-declutch?!

Martin, mine's a '49 and doesn't have syncro on any gear, if you're patient and rev match changing up you will be ok, but dropping down the gears needs a double de-clutch

Welcome to TM too

Nothing more pleasurable than the odd occasion I manage a perfect up or down change from/to non syncro second in my LR S2a.

As mentioned never a synchro. You will easily get used to shifting up, if you do 1st to second once you are moving, and just shift with a slight delay it will be perfectly quiet. 2nd to 3rd at 20 to 25 mph with a slight delay between gears and will always be quiet , except perhaps before oil is warmed up. In town I never go out of 2nd gear. Never go into 1st until at a dead stop. the engine has plenty of torque and will easily pull in 2nd from barely moving, and high easily down to 25, but will not hurt down to 20 if you plan to ease it back up right away.
