That is called a bodge or if you are MMC "a feature".
Logically over time if the holes are oversized the feature will appear on all non sleeved wire wheel cars.

Think my issue was more of a "clink", whereas yours sounds more like a proper "clunk"  In my day wheel spacers were a boy-racer bodge for those who couldn't afford the proper wheels (and usually led to eventual wheel bearing failure). Nice work MMC!

Not good, something with enough clearance to give an audible 'clunk' will eventually enlarge, especially with the forces of a driven wheel

Taken out the play by fitting spacers to reduce clearance as a temporary solution

As I understand it (apologies if wrong) the "solution" is to fit loose sleeves to bolts that hold adaptor to bolt on wheel hub to better match adaptor hole size. Not a spacer as such therefore.

If they can't get the holes to match the studs it would be a better solution to fit threaded sleeves. My bathroom light fitting uses threaded sleeves so it isn't rocket science.
The MGBGTV8 wheels used wheel-nuts which had a thick washer, and below that was a straight sided tube section, (part of the nut), which located (with a lot of slack) into holes in the alloy wheel centre, which do not have inserts. There was no tapered location at the centre. This was BL at it's best. In order to get some semblance of centralisation, I used to nip up with two MGB standard taper nuts, before fitting the real nuts. It was bad engineering.
