Just for a laugh if you switch to one of the home shopping channels, there is one that sell watches at crazy reduced prices but I've never heard of any of them.

I always smile at the perceived value they attach to limited additions, usually limited because they most likely don't have a big market demand for those watches...and mention something Swiss made and 'wow' you have hit the jackpot even if it is only a lowly eta automatic movement. You have to admire the sale pitches of golden opportunities and the watch n their hand or on their wrist always the best watch they have ever seen. Absolutely precious.

There's a telly programme I occasionally watch called 'Fake or Fortune'.

It takes a painting, and they try and work out if it can be attributable to a known/respected artist.

The value usually ranges from £500 if it can't be attributed, or £2,000,000 if it can. What makes me laugh is, at the end of the day, it's the same painting, and it's just the signature that's giving it the value, not the composition, quality or technique etc.

Shows the nature of our society, and how easily we can be convinced that an item has a 'value', which makes it desirable to some, and then the value increases further......

Surely it is just all just down to human nature and the forces we place on the market for anything at any particular period in time dependant on that which influences us most within our tribe..? The Morgan tribe seems likely to have membership across a wide variety of disposable income and associated priorities... Took me five years to save up the cash to buy my Morgan, others will have bought theirs with debt or the change in their pockets... makes no difference to me, but the marketplace will ever decide the value of our Morgans, as it will other of our acquisitions...? Whether those acquisitions may be bought on an purely investment basis or more likely partly justified as such, or more for the personal enjoyment derived from their ownership, matters not a jot, though if the rear end falls out of the monetary value of any such investment, then he who can derive most pleasure out of his ownership is more likely to still be deriving a degree of returns...?

I think there is a saying along the lines of "He who dies owning the most toys... WINS"

But in truth that does not work for me, I oft find it difficult to justify my toys to myself... I guess like many, some degree of man maths may be required to achieve a degree of comfort . Hmm..?

I must admit that when I was still working, a posh watch seemed very important.
I sported a Rolex GMT Master, which I still own and has recently been serviced by Rolex.

I also bought a lovely, wafer thin, gold, Longines dress watch, for evening wear.

Daily wear nowadays is either a battered Tag Formula 1, a large blue faced Tissot (very easy to read), or a battered Casio G Shock.

I really admire the craftsmanship of many top makes, but nowadays I’m just not fussed about owning any.

However I do pay particular attention to not wearing anything in the 4/4, that might accidentally damage the leather.

I have a few Christopher Ward watch, but non of their Morgan ones. I choose these by their design and function, such as a GMT when I was jetting off to the Vodafone Empire.

But I'm not sure about "that might accidentally damage the leather". You just make sure you make the ferry next time we are due to meet in France.

I plead the “Brittany Ferries defence” redirecting us to Caen.
Horrible old ferry and arrived at Caen before 6 in the morning.


However, we did eventually find a very good place for breakfast.

It was a great trip though, wasn’t it?

When I was working I had a collection of 5 Rolex and alternately wore them every day, as I don't believe in 'safe queens' most had a significant investment potential. I found when I retired some 15 years ago, I rarely wore a watch, it got to the stage I was experiencing problems such a dry movements, that arise from lack of use. Coupled with the staggering increase in vintage Rolex servicing costs required every 5 years or so, I was facing up to £5k total servicing cost for all the watches.
Then with the growing increase in watch thefts, the other week 6 attempted thefts in London by 2 guys in one day alone...enough was enough and I liquidated my collection, the last Rolex to go was in May I still have a few Tudor's but hardly wear them. I do have a couple of new Rolex models on order but unlikely to see them in my lifetime, the way delivery schedules are so extended these days. I don't miss them, I even turned down a new submariner a few months ago and they are really hard to get. Once I get the Rolex Skydweller, which is a really nice sophisticated inhouse annual calendar movement (for Rolex) I'll be more than happy.

Yes - love that programme - I get some perverse working class satisfaction seeing the toffs and fine art dealers tying themselves in knots trying to figure out if its a work of art by Paul Cezanne or Bert from Bolton who knocks a painting a week out of his ‘art shed’ to flog on eBay as a possible original or ‘in the style of’
