I took the advice here and got a Dolomite one from eBay. Problem - it came with a 6-pin plug and mine (86 Fiat +4) has a 5-pin socket. Swapped the 2 plugs but..... there's an extra wire, black, with no obvious place to go. It operates the wiper (fast and slow) but not the washer. Any ideas folks? Did some experiments with the black wire but no joy.

Black wires are usually Earths.

Yes black usually earth, tried an earth connection but no change. On the stalk the black goes up into the shaft along with (I think) a Light Green/Black wire. Will check pother connections in case I've made a bad one.

MIght be worth trying to get a Dolomite wiring diagram just to double check. I imagine there will be plenty on line.

When I swapped mine for a mini one, I sat down with diagrams from both cars and a multimeter just to check before spicing the old plug onto the new switch.

Success! Spliced the black wire in with the other green supply wires and it works. Agree with you TBM that checking with a multimeter is wise, mine decided to hide. Ever since I was required to empty MY garage for HER Morgan I can't find a thing....

You need to be very wary when purchasing items off Ebay as if it was advertised as wash wiper switch from a Dolomite then it should have a 5 pin connector fitted I would suggest that you have purchased a Lucas switch taken from a different car, that has a wiper cycle when operating the washer button.

But I supose all is well and good as you have solved your problem, just poor show by the seller.
