There are not so many stations left on long wave although Russia, North Africa and Mongolia still use it. Ditto to a lesser degree with medium wave as the BBC shuts down many regional station transmitters. It could be simply your aerial is optimised for FM reception and the weaker AM signals if available at all are not heard. If however you hear noise as you tune around on MW and LW there is a good chance your radio itself is working fine.

Most radio concerns are concentrating on digital (DAB) broadcasting and it's been muted more than once that eventually FM domestic services will also close.

This page will give you an idea of BBC transmitter coverage:

But usually I would expect to hear some kind of noise from the radio, even without any audible transmitters.

It does sound as though the radio is faulty, possibly in the AM tuner section. Medium wave and Long Wave are both amplitude modulated = AM as opposed to frequency modulation, FM.
Blaupunkt offer a retro looking DAB radio, the Bremen, SQR46DAB. But cheap it is not.

If it is of sentimental value there are repair services advertised out there - if not slot a new unit in.

https://www.quora.com/Does-an-AM-ra...rements-as-FM-when-it-comes-to-frequency

AM and FM requires different antenna. If you look on the back of a home hifi/receiver there is usually a little plastic dipole for AM and the T shaped nasty long cable for FM. It is quite possible that the FM antenna is linked up and and AM one has been forgotten as virtually no one uses it these days (not meant in a rude manner) so may not have been tested?

I fitted the Blaupunkt retro radio that Peter J mentioned above in to my S3 and then you can connect your phone via Bluetooth and listen to whichever radio station you like via 4/5G! Great stereo with no led screen or flashing lights etc.

I wish I'd never answered this thread: now I want to replace the modern looking Alpine unit in the Plus 8 with a Bremen!
