I now have preferred pumps at my local stations where I know the cut off is less sensitive and I get a better fill. The difference can be around 4 l.

Seems there's an element of "range anxiety" at work here. Has anyone measured/computed the difference between "full because it clicked-off", and "full because it then spilled on to the floor" ? Having been panicked by a vague fuel gauge, I have learned to just re-fuel my Roadster at say 250 mile-intervals.

I have learned to just re-fuel my Roadster at say 250 mile-intervals. Me too, my fuel gauge's attitude to accuracy is positively risible. If I fill up at 250 miles I know I have 50 miles in reserve, and removes all the worry about taking any notice whatsoever of the fuel gauge.

I still laugh at the information Phil Benfield (AWSC) gave me in 2001 when I bought my first Morgan, “If the needle moves it means there is something in the tank that may or may not be fuel….. trust it no more than that, use the odometer.”

Agreed Phil is right. MMC can't make a gauge to save their life, but I prefer to fill as much as possible to give range. Having said that I got 35 mpg on the indicator (36 mpg calculated) on Sunday driving from Poole to Felixstowe. The M25 & A12 were thankfully flowing.
I try to fill to the same level to get a more accurate view of MPG. With the ECU rev hand flash fitted my mpg indicator shows a weighted avg of 28.2 vs 27.5 mpg calculated. The indicator seems to be in UK gallons now not US

Mine must be a Friday afternoon job then as fuel gauge and miles to empty are spot on  John, with those mpg figures you're clearly not driving hard enough

Interesting thread. I have the same issue with my 54 +4. Still haven't found the source of the gas odor. Checked all the lines, all the clamps, and the carbs. Still have the smell, what a mystery.

Have you thought about adding a fuel dye? It may leave a trace after the fuel has evaporated. Never used this but just one of many out there - UV Fuel Dye

I had a smell of fuel every now and again. Turned out the smell was coming from the lock barrel on the filler cap. The inner o ring wasn't fitted the best, ordered a new barrel and seal anyway as it wasn't in the best of conditions and it has been fine ever since.
